PORTAGE DISTRICT LIBRARY is Hiring a Makerspace/Creation Station Assistant Near PORTAGE, MI

Description

Position: Makerspace/Creation Station Assistant

Status: Non-Exempt

Range: $13.50 - $20.10

Reports to: Head of Adult Services

Supervises: None 

Job Summary:

Responsible for assisting patrons in the makerspace and creation station by providing explanations and demonstrations of the equipment, helping patrons operate equipment when necessary, leading programs and small groups, and maintaining the software, equipment and supplies to keep the area operating smoothly.

Essential Job Functions:

A. Maintains software, machinery and supplies in the Makerspace and Creation Station

  1. Sets up and operates machines and provides basic maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and software.
  2. Aid in updating in-house procedure documentation for common tasks.
  3. Manage 3-D Printer queue.
  4. Perform general duties of stocking inventory, cleaning and organizing.
  5. Ensure compliance with safety, rules/policy guidelines.
  6. Trains on machines and software to expand knowledge and skills.

B. Provides assistance to patrons on lab devices during open hours and by appointment.

  1. Provide technical guidance for patrons on a variety of equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutter, sewing machines, and vinyl/paper cutting machines.
  2. Assist patrons with apps and software related to makerspace equipment and activities in the space.
  3. Act as the makerspace liaison at community event or programs when needed.
  4. Participates in the development and implementation of planning and visioning for the department.
  5. Create examples of items you can make in the Makerspace.

C. Leading programs or small group instruction

  1. Assist with programs as needed when there are programs in the makerspace.
  2. Assist the STEAM Initiatives Coordinator in implementing new maker activities.
  3. Work with youth through adults with hands-on projects, especially those relating to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Art & Math) components.
  4. Plan and implement programs to help patrons learn to use the makerspace offerings.

D. Collects daily and monthly statistics.

E. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  1. Ability to write, retain, interpret, and apply policies and procedures.
  2. Organized with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
  3. Ability to explain processes with patience and professionalism.
  4. Skill with technology, art, crafts, engineering, science, and design.
  5. Experience with Windows, Mac, Android, and IOS operating systems and software.
  6. Ability to troubleshoot problems with technology hardware, software and equipment.
  7. Work within a collaborative environment.
  8. Possession of excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to make sound decisions.
  9. Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
  10. Visual acuity and physical skills necessary to retrieve library materials from shelves and storage areas, maintain library materials and operate equipment. The incumbent is required to have the physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts and lift/carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  11. Hearing ability to answer telephone and patron inquiries.
  12. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgement in handling information and records.
  13. Ability to simplify complex processes to increase efficiency.
  14. Computer skills necessary to effectively access information on the computer.
  15. Ability to operate a variety of library equipment including a computer, fax and copy machine.
  16. Ability to work independently.
  17. Ability to address and resolve or diffuse patron complaints equitably.
  18. Must be able to read, write and understand the English language.
  19. Must be able to operate office equipment including management tools (Windows applications, databases, etc.)
  20. 20. Ability to quickly learn new technologies and integrate them into daily tasks.

Working Conditions:

  1. Generally will work within a normal office environment, with minimal discomfort due to extreme temperatures, dust, and noise. 
  2. Job requires walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping and reaching. Requires the use of a video display monitor, keyboard, and mouse. 
  3. Employees may interact with upset staff and /or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing library policies and procedures.
  4. Ability to lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds.
  5. Ability to push book trucks containing up to 150 pounds.
  6. Work hours may be varied, including daytime, evenings and weekend hours. 

Education, experience and Training:

  1. The job requires a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
  2. Requires experience in a customer service setting.
  3. Experience with library related work experience. (Preferred).
  4. Adobe Creative Cloud experience preferred.
  5. Experience with Windows, Mac, Android, and IOS operating systems and software 
  6. Skill with technology, art, crafts, engineering, science, and design.
  7. Basic experience with mobile applications, online tools, and new and emerging technologies. (Preferred).
