Classroom Teacher K-2

Supervises: Teacher Assistant
 
Job Summary: To create learning experiences that make subject matter meaningful for students.
 
Essential Functions:
  1. Maintain an instructional plan, which is compatible with the NC Standard Course of Study, school, and county curricular goals and is based upon the knowledge of the students and the community.
  2. Understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline taught and create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.
  3. Present lessons that are aligned to the NC Standard Course of Study and provide materials for implementing lessons. Lessons include: review, introduction, presentations, relevant examples, and necessary modification, clear assignments, summarization, and evaluation.
  4. Provide prompt feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of student’s work.
  5. Understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.
  6. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage student development of critical thinking, problem solving and performance skills.
  7. Use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
  8. Use knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
  9. Maintain a high level of student time-on task.
  10. Maintain accurate records to document student performance.
  11. Establish a set of rules and procedures that govern student behavior and administrative atters.
  12. Frequently monitor the behavior of all students during whole class, small group, seatwork activities, and during transitions between instructional activities; stop inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, yet maintain the dignity of the student.
  13. Understand how children learn and develop, and provide learning opportunities that support a child’s intellectual, social and personal development.
  14. Understand and use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner.
  15. Maintain clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates.
  16. Foster relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well being.
  17. Is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professional in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
  18. Give students experiential knowledge that correlates with North Carolina curriculum objectives using community resources and field trips.
  19. Develop a plan for professional growth and participate in staff development activities.
  20. Maintain high performance expectations for all students.
  21. Develop and implement PEP’s as needed.
  22. Attend all meetings.

23. Serve as a positive representative of the school in the community.
 
Education, experience and skills required:
  1. Have or be eligible for NC licensure in Elementary Education.
  2. Previous experience with young children preferred.
 
Terms of Employment: 10 months – Teacher Salary Scale
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Teachers.
