Job Description:
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property on foot and/or assigned motor vehicle; monitors surveillance equipment; inspects buildings, parking lots, equipment, and access points; performs lock/unlock procedures; permitting entry.
  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.
  • Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility, and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.
  • Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities; informing violators of policy and procedures.
  • Provides Traffic Control (directing motorists) as well as enforcement of PLNU Vehicle Code.
  • Prepares written reports of daily activities, observations, and incidents.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Acts as a first responder to alarms, collisions, injuries, and other emergencies.
  • Uses a radio or other communication devices in a clear and concise manner.
  • Answering phone calls to the Public Safety dispatch line, dispatching officers accordingly, and keeping detailed and accurate log entries in CAD.
  • Greeting and assisting walk-in customers to the Department of Public Safety.
  • Monitoring the Public Safety dispatch email account.
  • Monitoring the university surveillance system.
  • Acting as an operator of the university mass notification system, access control system, and alarm monitoring software.
  • Issuing employee and student ID cards - monitoring and tracking ID card charges, supply inventory, and technical support issues.
  • Receiving and logging lost & found items and collaborating with the main lost and found coordinator.
  • Assist with office duties (i.e. inventory, ordering supplies, mail distribution, etc.)
  • Covering Welcome Center duties as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Understanding and commitment to the spiritual mission of the University.
  • Current California Security Guard registration or the ability to obtain a Security Guard license from the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services within 30 days of hire.
  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED use or the ability to complete training and obtain certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED use within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
  • High School diploma or GED certificate. (Bachelor's Degree preferred)
  • Experience as a law-enforcement or security officer and/or experience using two-way radio communication.
  • Basic knowledge of access control software/hardware, surveillance camera software/hardware, CAD software systems, mass notification software systems, and ID card creation software/hardware.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. (Bilingual preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, and solve problems.
  • Strong Multitasking skills, proactive approach to job responsibilities, and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.
  • Ability to work all shifts/locations. The Department of Public Safety works 24/7, 365 days a year, at three separate campuses and other assignments.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Must own a cell phone and be willing to be assigned "on-call" status.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement. In addition, staff agree to live in agreement with PLNU's Community Life Covenant.
  • The job offer is contingent on a clear background check, pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug screening.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Full range of hearing.
  • Extensive walking.
  • Extensive sedentary duties (i.e. dispatching, Welcome Center, etc.)
  • Eyesight is correctable to 20/30 with normal color vision.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
SPECIAL NOTES
This position will be a shift rotational position and may include Point Loma Campus, Mission Valley Campus, Balboa Campus , and Liberty Station Conference Center. Shifts and days off will vary. Midnight shifts and weekends will be required when rotating to the Point Loma Campus.
