Description: Crossing Guard (Multiple Locations)

Hours/Days: 1 - 2 hrs. daily (school days)

Salary Range:
$16.25 - $17.10

Organizational Relationships: This position reports to the CMSD12 Student Achievement Department. Requires interaction with students, their families, and community members.

Position Summary: Crossing guards provide safe crossings of the roadways and model appropriate street skills and behavior for children on their way to and from school.

  • Reports consistently for work as scheduled
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Direct pedestrians across streets after assessing traffic flow to identify breaks to allow for visibility and safe crossing
  • Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction
  • Communicate crossing rules and regulations to students and ensure their understanding for optimal safety
  • Employ the appropriate tools and equipment
  • Standing in the roadway with STOP paddle continuously raised to shoulder height to show that pedestrians are using the crosswalk.
  • Vigilantly watch for impending dangers to develop effective solutions before an accident occurs
  • Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street
  • Fulfilling job requirements outdoors in all weather, including rain, fog, snow, sleet, cold, heat, humidity, and wind
  • Attend required training

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent degree
  • Social perceptiveness and strong eyesight

  • Works with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
