JOB DESCRIPTION

for

Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

Detailed analysis of the position of Certified Medication Aide has been carefully carried out by Administration in order to comply with the provisions and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act in a manner that is objective and non-discriminatory to people with disabilities. The analysis accurately identifies and separates essential functions of the job of Certified Medication Aide. Included in this process is the gathering of information from employees holding this position and then compiling the data, evaluating it, and drawing pertinent employment conclusions that encourage and enhance opportunities for people with disabilities at The Pleasant View Home, Inc.

The workplace at The Pleasant View Home will be made readily accessible to and usable by people with disabilities without causing undue hardship to the facility. Supervision:

The Certified Medication Aide must report to the Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse or other person assigned to them at the start of each shift, before leaving the immediate unit, whether on break or for another purpose, and are accountable for designating another employee to monitor assigned duties and/or residents care during the time of absence. The Certified Medication Aide will report to the Director of Nursing/Charge Nurse or other person assigned to them immediately when there is any change in a resident’s condition, in addition to reporting any pertinent information concerning the resident that would be helpful in planning that resident’s care.

Qualifications:

Must have a certificate of completion of the state-approved course in Medication Administration or be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Must have a current Medication Aide Permit or Certification valid in the State of Kansas and be in good standing.

The preferred minimum educational background for CMA is a high school education coupled with college courses.

Recommendations for Training, Skills and Experience:

The Certified Medication Aide will have completed the training required by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), plus the state approved training for qualifications for Medication Aide.

The facility prefers Certified Medication Aide to have six (6) months experience working in a nursing home, hospital, home health agency, or other health care facility.

The Certified Medication Aide will meet the minimum age requirements for the State of Kansas..

The following skills needed to perform with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential functions of care giving of this job in the interest of residents. The ability to:

  • Recognize and respond to the needs of residents.
  • Make prompt and accurate judgments with regard to resident care.
  • Accurately take and record vital signs, including blood pressures.
  • Evaluate sensory limitations of residents and adjust care-giving methods to maximize communication.
  • Take measures to reduce risk to residents' diagnoses, current condition, etc.
  • Observe and assess at the nursing assistant level the physical and psycho-social and safety needs of residents.
  • Provides direct care as required.
  • Performs special duties as assigned.
  • Prepares, administers, documents regularly prescribed medications in accordance with the rules outlined in approved training program.
  • Supervises assigned staff and residents in the absence of the Charge Nurse.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service training as required.

Essential Functions (with or without reasonable accommodations):

The determination of which functions are essential may be critical to the determination of whether or not the person with a disability is qualified. The determination of whether or not a particular function is essential includes one or more of the following factors:

  • Can the position exist without the performance of this particular task/function?

Other determining factors are time spent performing the function and the consequences of failing to require the employee to perform the function. The following job functions have been determined as essential to the position of Certified Medication Aide at Pleasant View Home. Functions are accompanied by the frequency range of performance time to complete the task per shift, or by the percentage or duration of work time per shift spent to complete the function. Because of fluctuations in work load demands, and because care-giving tasks often overlap, frequency ranges and percentages vary by assignment, day of week, day, evening, etc. However, because of the nature of the position, low frequency, percentage or duration of time spent on a particular task may not indicate lack of importance.

  • Report changes in the resident’s condition to the charge/staff nurse as soon as possible.

Document in records.

  • Report accidents and incidents when they occur.
  • Assist with admitting, transferring and discharging residents.
  • Routinely review work assignments and schedules to update or change task objectives.
  • Perform assigned tasks in accordance with The Pleasant View Home, Inc. policies and

procedures, as instructed by supervisor.

  • Notify Pleasant View Home of pending absence or tardiness within the time frame described in personnel handbook. Prior to reporting to work.
  • Report to supervisor all complaints and grievances made by residents, families, visiting individuals, agencies, etc.
  • Communicate with co-workers at all levels to adequately meet the needs of residents.
  • As appropriate, help create an atmosphere of optimism, warmth, and interest in resident's personal and health care needs.
  • Meet with nursing personnel as scheduled, to assist in identifying and correcting problems, and/or the improvement of services.
  • As instructed, assist residents with the following personal nursing care functions, and explain each procedure to the resident as care is given:
    • Dental and Mouth Care
    • Bathing
    • Dressing and Grooming
    • Hair Care
    • Nail Care
    • Shaving
    • Bowel and Bladder Care
    • Other Personal and Hygiene Care
  • Monitor and intervene in keeping mobility-limited and bedbound residents clean and dry.
  • Make occupied and unoccupied beds and change bed linens.
  • Record, document and report intake and output on residents.
  • Collect urine, stool, sputum, etc. specimens and assist residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, lifts, etc.
  • Assist with lifting, turning, moving, positioning and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, lifts, etc.
  • Answer resident call lights promptly
  • Assist with and/or perform restorative and rehabilitative procedures.
  • Measure and record vital signs, such as temperatures, pulse, respirations, weight, height, anatomical dimension/circumference, etc.
  • Observe, monitor, and report symptoms of potential skin breakdown and/or decubitus ulcers and intervene with appropriate skin care as instructed.
  • Provide treatment or care of catheter, ostomy, and other elimination devices as procedurally appropriate.
  • Assist with the application of slings, elastic bandages, binders, etc.
  • Provide range of motion exercises.
  • Observe, monitor and report condition of disorientated and comatose residents.
  • Assist with the care of dying residents and provide post-mortem care.
  • Attend and participate in orientation programs, ongoing training and educational classes.
  • Follow established safety precautions and observe, monitor and intervene or report conditions in the facility.
  • Follow established smoking regulations and report violations.
  • Wash hands before and after performing services for residents.
  • Review care plans routinely and report tentative changes applicable to residents' condition, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy of resident care, procedures, and documentation, and communicate with the resident on an adult and mature basis with dignity and respect for the resident's rights and wishes.
  • Immediately report any communicable or infectious disease that you contract.
  • Follow established universal precautions and isolation procedures.
  • Gives direct nursing care as assigned.
  • Administers and documents regularly prescribed medications after personally preparing those medications.
  • Observes for and reports side effect of medication to the Charge Nurse and/or Unit Nurse Supervisor.
  • Takes and records vital signs prior to administration of medication which could affect or change the vital signs.
  • May administer oxygen per nasal cannula or non-sealing face mask in AN EMERGENCY in the absence of a licensed nurse.
  • May apply specifically ordered ophthalmic, otic, nasal, vaginal and rectal medications.
  • If a PRN medication has been ordered, it may be administered after authorization by a licensed nurse.

Marginally Essential Functions

The following job functions have been determined as marginal or non-essential to the position of Certified Medication Aide at Pleasant View Home, Inc. (See “Essential Functions” for interpretation of frequency, percentage, and duration.)

  • Document observed data on f low sheets, notes, charts, etc. in an informative and descriptive manner.
  • Introduce newly admitted or newly transferred erred resident to his/her roommates, if any, as well as to other residents and co-workers, as appropriate.
  • Inventory, identify and help store resident's personal possessions on an ongoing basis. residents in preparing for activity and social programs.
  • Assist with caring for resident's eyeglasses, hearing aids, prostheses, etc.
  • Observe, monitor, and intervene for availability, and "reachability" of bedside call signs, as well

as cleanliness of residents' water pitchers, drinking glasses, straws, and other bedside items.

  • Serve between meal, bedtime and other nutritional snacks.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties related to resident care,
  • Clean used equipment such as utensils, thermometers, etc.
  • Assist and direct visitors as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Strength Required:

This facility has determined that an applicant or employee is qualified for the position of Certified Medication Aide when that person can perform the essential physical tasks of lifting, turning, moving, positioning and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, lifts, etc., with or without reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of himself /herself or others, including residents, co-worker, and others. The minimum of pounds determined to be appropriate for Certified Medication Aide to lift with or without reasonable accommodations is 40.

Communication:

As an essential function of the job, Certified Medication Aide is regularly called on to effectively report

Emergencies such as, resident condition changes, as well as accidents and incidents, complaints and grievances by residents and their families, etc. It is determined that Certified Medication Aide must have the ability to communicate with others, with or without reasonable accommodation and not pose a direct threat to safety or health of self or others.

Environmental Conditions:

Except where appropriate and conducive to accomplishing the goals and objectives of a particular task, Certified Medication Aide will work in a well-lighted area that is ventilated and as physically and physiologically innocuous as possible under the conditions which exist at a particular time. Because the essential functions of the job of Certified Mediation Aide may sometimes require caring for residents, bodily functions and may be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, odors, hazardous chemicals, and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to exposure of AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis B viruses involving Risk Classification Categories 1, 2, and 3, ** environmental conditions will fluctuate. To be qualified for the position of Certified Medication Aide applicants and employees will have the ability to work in the environment conducive to caring for residents, with or without reasonable accommodations and without posing a direct threat to self or others.

Attire:

The Certified Medication Aide will follow the dress code of the facility, which includes neat, clean, odor-free grooming and dress, as specified in the personnel handbook. Persons requesting an exception will be reasonably accommodated as appropriate.

Summary of Occupational Exposures:

The employee must avoid exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases and air contaminants by following the procedures for infection prevention and exposure control.

Bloodborne Pathogens:

Tasks and procedures performed by employee involve risks classified by CDC as:

Category I - Tasks may involve exposure to blood or body fluids.

Specific Task Exposure:

  • Handling soiled linens and clothing: Blood, urine, feces, vomitus, wound exudates, semen/vaginal secretions, other body fluids (cerebrospinal, synovial, pleural, peritoneal, pericardial).
  • Straightening resident rooms and common areas: Blood, urine, feces, vomitus, wound exudates, semen/vaginal secretions.
  • Refer to Exposure Control Plan for additional information.
