Title: Activity Director FMLA: Exempt
Supervisor: Administrator/Executive Director
Purpose:
The primary purpose of the Activity Director is to assist in the planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing Activity Programs in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, as well as our established policies and procedures. These activities have been developed to assure the spiritual development and the emotional, recreational and social needs of the residents.
Functions and responsibilities:
Listed below is an outline of the functions and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. As an Activity
Assistant you will be delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability to carry out your assigned duties
Assist in planning, developing, organizing, carrying out and evaluating the Activity Programs of the facility
Meet with administration, medical and nursing staff and other related departments in planning activities
Develop and maintain a good working rapport with other departments within the facility and outside community health, welfare and social agencies to assure that activity programs can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residents
Assist in the development, administering and coordinating of department policies and procedures
Keep abreast of current federal and state regulations, as well as professional standards, and make recommendations on changes in policies and procedures to the Administrator/Executive Director
Review department policies and procedures, at least annually
Assist in the development of the department budget and monitor expenditures to stay within that budget
Serve on various committees of the facility as appointed by the Administrator/Executive Director
Assist in the development of and participate in regularly scheduled orientation and in-service training programs
Participate in community planning related to the interests of the facility and the services and needs of the residents and residents’ families
Ensure Nursing Supervisor assists residents with selections of activity in compliance with physicians’ orders
Interview residents/residents’ families as necessary and in a private setting
Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charge slips, reports, etc. and submitting them to the Administrator/Executive Director as required
Involve the resident/residents’ families in planning activities when possible
Assist in arranging transportation for field trips when necessary
Encourage residents to develop their educational development through reading, etc.
Provide information to residents/residents’ families as to the activity programs available
Encourage hobbies and crafts and provide materials in keeping with residents’ financial status and department budget
Obtain information concerning the residents’ background to better provide activities to meet their needs
Provide consultation to staff, community agencies, etc. in effort to solve the needs and problems of the residents through the development of activity/social service programs
Attend and participate in professional activities and programs
Assist in the review and updating of departmental job descriptions at least annually
Record and maintain activity progress notes as well as a record of resident activities
Maintain an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other health related facilities and organizations
Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department
Compile and maintain an activity schedule, available projects, crafts, resources, etc.
Meet with staff on a regularly scheduled basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or the improvement of services
May arrange for sale of articles made by residents i.e. at bazaars, in gift shop, etc.
Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information to assure resident rights are protected
Coordinate activities with other departments as necessary
Work with the facility’s consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as required
Make routine visits to residents and perform assistance with crafts, projects, etc. as necessary
Review complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the Administrator/Executive
Director
Keep abreast of economic conditions/situations and recommend adjustments to assure the continued ability to provide quality resident care
Maintain contact with the residents’ family, involving them with non-medical progress reports as necessary
Recommend to the Administrator/Executive Director the equipment and supply needs of the department
Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator/Executive Director concerning the operation of the Activity Department
Assist in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished
Assist in making appointments for the residents/residents’ families as requested or appropriate
Schedule movies, plan parties and provide games for patients
Report all incidents/accidents immediately
Report all unsafe or hazardous conditions or equipment immediately
Assure that established safety regulations are followed at all times
Provide craft supplies and material and supervise activities
Assure that a current resident activity schedule is maintained for each resident
Be alert for any change in the residents’ condition and report any changes to the Charge Nurse immediately
Encourage residents to participate in religious activities through religious services, reading material, visits with
Chaplin, etc. to fulfill their basic religious needs
Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary
Assume the authority, responsibility and accountability of Activity Director
Assist bed residents by visiting with them, writing letters, running errands, making appointments, etc. as necessary
Provide reading material in braille, tapes and records for blind residents
Assist in providing library service for residents through cooperation with the local library
Participate in discharge planning, development and implementation of activity plans, schedules and resident assessments
Other tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate or as may be directed by the Administrator/Executive
Director
Working Conditions:
Sitting, standing, bending, lifting and moving intermittently during working hours
Works in well-lit and well ventilated areas
Subject to frequent interruptions
Involved with residents, family members, personnel, visitors, etc. under all conditions and circumstances
Willing to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary
Attend and participate in educational programs
Subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, substances, odors, etc. throughout the work day
Be economical and careful with supplies, equipment, etc.
Requirements:
Must possess, at a minimum a high school diploma
Must have an aptitude for and some training in arts and crafts
Must be able to read, write and speak the English language
Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant
Possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents visitors and the general public
Be a minimum of 20 years of age and of good moral character
Willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel
Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning
Possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing activity programs
Must have a sincere desire to work with the aged
Must have some understanding of the social, psychological and recreational needs of the aged
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
Must possess sight and hearing or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function
Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies
Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability
Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times, hostile people
May be required to lift equipment and supplies and occasionally move furniture
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
