Platte County is Hiring a Public Defender Near Columbus, NE

Applications are being accepted for the appointment of the Platte County Public Defender. The appointee shall fulfill the remainder of the term of office expiring January 2027.

Position Overview:

  • The Public Defender must be a lawyer currently licensed to practice law in Nebraska.
  • The Platte County Public Defender is a full-time position, supervising two full-time Deputy Public Defenders and two legal support staff. Prior jury trial experience is expected for this supervisory position.
  • The Public Defender is responsible for preparing the annual budget for the office to be approved by the Platte County Board of Supervisors.
  • The Platte County Public Defender's Office represents indigent defendants in misdemeanor, felony, child support enforcement/establishment, mental health board, and limited juvenile court capacities.

Position Salary:

  • 2024: $77,000
  • 2025: $78,000
  • 2026: $79,000
  • Excellent benefits package.
