SEDATION SERVICES PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The Program Director for Sedation Services is responsible, in consultation and coordination with Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Physician Associate Medical Director(s) (AMDs), and the Procedural Abortion and Sedation Services Clinical Director, for the supervision of Sedation Services at all PPIL Health Centers. 

Essential Functions:

1. Developing and updating affiliate protocols for Sedation in accordance with the PPIL Medical Standards and Guidelines.

2. Hiring, including but not limited to screening, interviewing and checking references for appropriate Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) candidates.

3. Working with the Procedural Abortion and Sedation Services Clinical Director, oversees the training/education/supervision/proctoring and ongoing monitoring of sedation professionals, as well as:

a. Primary supervision of CRNAs

b. Secondary supervision of Supervised Sedation Professionals

4. Working with CMO, AMDs, and Procedural Abortion and Sedation Services Clinical Director, oversees medication management of Controlled Substances, including but not limited to policies and procedures for storing, handling, wasting, and logging of medications.

5. Providing ongoing availability of consultation when needed.

6. Granting clinical privileges relevant to the service.

7. Participating in risk and quality management activities, including, but not limited to:

a. Medical record review and other program audits 

b. Peer review 

c. Review of required documentation (program complications, outcome/quality, etc.)

8. The program director may designate staff to assist in the performance of these responsibilities.

9. Patient care: Provide direct medical care in the provision of sedation services (three) 3 days per week.

Other Responsibilities:

1. Undertake such other activities necessary to promote the furtherance of the goals of PPIL.

2. Provide routine medical chart audits in accordance with PPFA Standards and Guidelines and PPIL protocols and procedures.

3. Attend medical services and medical services core team meetings as needed.

4. Notify PPIL of any change in status as a CRNA, licensure, accreditation, and/or involvement in litigation.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to remain informed about PPIL protocols, policies, and procedures.

6. Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to PPIL core values of access, activism, care, confidentiality, diversity, excellence, integrity, respect, self-determination, and stewardship; practice these values in relations with internal and external customers.

7. Other duties as assigned

Supervisor: Chief Medical Officer 

Status: Full time, exempt from the overtime provisions of wage and salary regulations

Qualifications 

Education: A registered nurse holding current license in the State of Illinois, who has successfully 

completed additional didactic training in order to qualify as a certified registered nurse anesthetist; or a 

person holding a current license in Illinois as a licensed medical doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy. 

Experience:

Required: Experience and training as a CRNA, demonstrated leadership skills through one or more of the following: special projects, precepting licensed professionals, program development or quality improvement projects, supervisory experience.

Preferred: experience in family planning, women’s health or an OB/GYN setting; experience as a CRNA in a high-volume out-patient setting; at least one year of clinical experience at Planned Parenthood.

~ Commitment to the efficient and customer-oriented provision of services, as well as commitment to the operating goals and philosophies of PPIL.

~ Willingness to participate in a team approach to health care delivery.

~ Must be willing and able to travel to all health centers that provide procedural abortion services at least one time per quarter.

~ Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

~ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, as is the ability to interact with diverse groups.
