Planned Parenthood California Central Coast is Hiring a Director of Public Affairs Near Santa Barbara, CA

PPCCC is a trusted provider of high-quality, affordable reproductive health care along California’s Central Coast. Each year, PPCCC provides 35,000 people on the central coast with health care services; including sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, vasectomies, and safe and legal abortion care at our six health center locations. PPCCC also provides comprehensive sexuality education programs to help adults and teens make healthy decisions, prevent unintended pregnancies, and avoid sexually transmitted infection.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Public Affairs will develop and implement strategies for an effective Planned Parenthood presence in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties. The Director of Public Affairs provides leadership in the areas of grassroots advocacy, public policy, legislation, and voter education as they relate to reproductive healthcare access and rights.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists in the preparation of and manages departmental budget.

Develops partnerships with community-based, grassroots advocacy groups in support of organizational objectives.

Centers diversity, equity, and inclusion in coalition-building.

Develops lasting partnerships with leaders in underserved communities.

Represent PPCCC at community meetings and provide Planned Parenthood presentations as needed.

Plan and implement community events to further the mission of PPCCC throughout the organization’s service area.

Participate in Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) meetings and serve on PPAC committee conference calls.

Develops strategies and implements grassroots organizing plans for public policy campaigns, including annual Capitol Day.

Co-lead/manage affiliates Young Advocates program in partnership with development staff.

Oversee the Generation Action Organizing project on college campuses.

Develop and implement plans to build capacity and online activism/engagement through the Email Action Alert Network and social media sites.

Maintain knowledge about current public policy, and legislative issues. Participate in lobbying and advocacy meetings with local, state, and federal levels of government.

Planned Parenthood Central Coast Action Fund:

Serve as staff support to the 501 C(4) organization, by supporting VP with tasks such as: preparation of candidate questionnaires, voter guides, electoral field work, committee, and monthly board meetings

Manage Action Fund PAC reporting requirements

Abide by Action Fund policy on political endorsements and campaigning

Update Action Fund Website as necessary

Assist in the creation of marketing materials and communications to supporters

Provide support for fundraising events

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as a member of the Core Management Team

Supervises Community Organizers, Community Outreach and Digital Coordinator, and RAIZ Organizer

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to senior leaders, public groups, and/or board of directors.

Strong commitment to the mission, policies, goals and philosophy of Planned Parenthood. Ability to delegate and empower staff effectively.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.

Strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Ability to communicate well with staff, clients, volunteers, outside parties, and the Board.

Willing to travel throughout affiliate three county service area, and occasionally to Sacramento, Washington, D.C., or as needed.

Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science or a related field or equivalent experience.

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in community organizing, public policy and/or electoral work.

Relationships with local community leaders and elected officials

Excellent skills in Microsoft Windows, PowerPoint, Excel, Canva and Publisher required. Ability to input and analyze information using relevant databases (VAN, Convio). 

Knowledge of the political landscape in the PPCCC service area is desirable

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast’s (PPCCC’s) compensation philosophy supports the organization’s mission,vision, and values. Each position has a salary based on market value and the organization’s pay levels. The starting salary range for this position is $105,251/year with an opportunity for an increase after six months of employment.As part of our commitment to pay equity, PPCCC does not negotiate salaries.

Pay Differential: $1.00/hour bilingual Spanish/English differential pay is offered upon passing the language assessment test.
