Given that Arizona could ban abortion with a court decision on any day, working with impacted communities and activated supporters is a keystone of PPAZ’s organizing philosophy: lived experience and the stories that go along with those experiences are invaluable currency when working to educate decision-makers on the impacts of public policy or court decisions like Dobbs that overturned Roe.

GENERAL PRIORITIES

• Practice within the scope of Registered Nurse license and in accordance with agency protocols and policies.
• Assist physician and patients during abortion procedures that utilize IV sedation by establishing IV access, performing blood draws, administering medications per physician orders, monitoring patient vital signs and lab work, and completing all required documentation per protocol. 
• Ensure patient electronic records/charts and logs are completed and maintained promptly and accurately. Notify physician of any medical problem or other special concerns of client that may relate to the abortion or choice of birth control method. 
• Assist in the set-up and clean-up of exam rooms. May perform blood draws, TB testing, injections, including vaccines, basic ultrasonography for gestational dating after completion of ultrasound training and under the direction of the physician.
• Dispense medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician. At the end of each procedure day, secure all medication used in the procedure room in a locked and designated area for pharmaceutical storage. Maintain accurate inventory of all drugs used in the procedure room.
• Monitor patients in recovery room, including recording vital signs, dispensing medication, giving verbal and written aftercare instructions and birth control information, and reporting signs or symptoms of post abortion complications to the physician on duty.
• Provide excellent customer service by eliciting client needs, educating clients on reproductive and sexual health issues, health center services, and community resources, including birth control methods, pregnancy options including abortion, STI’s/HIV and safer sex in a non-judgmental manner.
• Comply with all applicable state (Dept of Health, Pharmacy Board, Nursing Board, Medical Board) and federal Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA), and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards, infection control, safety and DEA) regulations. 
• Understand and compl with policies regarding patient rights. Ensure that informed consent has been obtained before any procedures are initiated. Know and adhere to the requirements of the Woman’s Right to Know Act, parental consent for minors seeking abortion, and the screening and reporting of child abuse. Create and maintain an environment of dignity and safety for patient sensitivity and privacy. 

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

• Completion of an accredited RN program and a current RN license.
• One year of clinical healthcare experience.
• Ability to triage patient acuity and multi-task clinical responsibilities.
• Experience with EPIC EMR preferred.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
• Effective communication and strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Must be available Thursdays and Fridays.
