Primary Purpose:
Provide daily support to the school district via communications, community information, media relations, and marketing. Promote and communicate positive public information between the school district and community. Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district. Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees, students, parents, and community.
Work under general supervision with moderate latitude for use of initiative and independent judgement with respect to matters of significance.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, media studies, education, or related field
Master’s Degree, preferred
Reliable Transportation & Valid Texas Driver’s License
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated skills in writing, editing, publishing, and public speaking
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
Thorough knowledge and understanding of media and public information functions, photography,
proofreading, communication theory and technique
Ability to use personal computer to design and produce district publications (desktop publishing
software, Word, ClarisWorks, PageMaker PhotoShop, etc.)
Ability to analyze complex information and synthesize into readable and persuasive written material
Ability to meet established deadlines
Experience:
A minimum of three years’ experience in journalism, communication, public relations/information, or related field
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Public and Community Relations/Information
1. Serve as the information liaison between the school district and the community. Serve as district spokesperson and coordinate media coverage including preparing press releases and publishing articles and photos in local media and other publications.
2. In collaboration with the Superintendent and district administrative staff, plan, develop, and implement the district’s marketing and communications program.
3. Ensure that public information activities contribute to the attainment of district goals and objectives.
4. In collaboration with district staff, design, prepare and edit district publications including newsletters,
recruitment brochures, annual school calendar, invitations and programs for special events, and other
publications.
5. Serve as district representative on community committees, as required. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs including speaking at civic organization meetings and make presentations.
6. Attend meetings of the Board and prepare such reports for the Board, community, and staff.
7. In collaboration with district staff, support and advise campuses and departments concerning communication and marketing of school activities and events.
8. Supervise the development and maintenance of the district’s web page for content and design.
Policies, Reports, and Law
9. Develop and publicize reports related to the performance of the district and articulate district goals and objectives.
10. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
11. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents as required.
Budget
12. Develop and administer the public information/media budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
Other
13. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
14. Maintain confidentiality of information.
15. Maintain a cooperative attitude and exhibit loyalty to department and district.
