Pittsburgh Public Schools is Hiring an Adjunct Teacher, Visual Arts Ceramics - Middle School Near Pittsburgh, PA

The Visual Arts program at Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 is seeking a ceramics adjunct to begin in the 2024-2025 school year to work 15 hours a week at a competitive hourly rate with no benefits with students ranging in ages from 11 to 18 as well as to collaborate with the faculty on department wide projects and student showcases. The ideal candidate will have an MFA in ceramics, show a record of producing and exhibition ceramic work, and possess teaching experiences, and an understanding of the best pedagogical practices for teaching ceramics and ceramic design. Must have working operational knowledge of: load/unload program & monitor Alpine, Skutt and Bailey electric ceramic kilns, care of kiln equipment, reconstituting clay, glaze preparation, underglazes, pottery wheels and care of pottery wheels and splash pans. The applicant will inspire and bring enthusiasm to students from a wide range of backgrounds and instill a positive attitude towards visual art for all. Upon selected for an interview, the applicant will be asked to submit: 10-12 photographs of images of recent artwork, sample curricula, and images of students' artwork. 
Salary
$36.63/hour
15 hours per week

Qualifications
  • Ceramicist with proven exhibition history
  • Bachelor?s degree in Fine Arts, Masters degree in Fine Arts preferred?
  • Teaching experience with diverse audiences: middle school, high school, university and /or community settings
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Collaborative and creative team player, capable of sharing studio space and coordinating kiln firing schedules with the afternoon high school ceramics instructor
  • Collaborative work with community arts organizations

Essential Job Functions
  • Organizing and maintaining tools, sink area, aprons, ware boards, bats, canvas, and plastic storage containers?
  • Organizing and cleaning the studio at the beginning and end of the year.?
  • Tasks related to the ordering, picking up and/or delivery of supplies, clay storage, etc.?
  • Love of learning and of art?
  • Working knowledge of computer programs, Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office?
  • Knowledge of art history and contemporary social, artistic and cultural issues?
  • Excellent writing skills?
  • Assisting students with the creation of portfolio work and artist statements?
  • Assisting with student and faculty exhibitions?
  • Teaching students to think critically through creative problem solving, experimentation, and inventiveness.
  • Regular communication with students, parents and other CAPA Visual Arts staff to share artistic progress, encourage positive behavior, and resolve behavioral and artistic issues.
