The Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) Summer BOOST program is a summer learning camp designed to offer Pittsburgh Public School students completing Kindergarten through 7th grade an opportunity to engage in exciting academic instruction and unique enrichment activities. With the goal of combating summer learning loss, Summer BOOST provides campers with academic support delivered by certified teachers and exposes them to one-of-a-kind activities facilitated by contracted enrichment partners. Under the immediate direction of the teacher, the position of Educational Assistant III (EAIII) - ESL is responsible for the supervision and instruction of ESL (English as a Second Language) students. The Educational Assistant III (EAIII) - ESL will support instructional activities in both the ESL classroom and mainstream, as appropriate, with teacher guidance. Travel may be required between various sites.
* Written and oral proficiency in English and Ukrainian is a prerequisite for this position.*
Work Schedule
Start Date: June 20, 2024
End Date: July 29, 2024
Pre-Camp Work consists of 30 hours which includes the following aspects:
  • Thursday, June 20, 2024 (7:45am - 3:45pm)
  • Friday, June 21, 2024 (7:45am - 3:45pm)
  • Monday, June 24, 2024 (7:45am - 3:45pm)
  • Tuesday, June 25, 2024 (10:30am - 6:30pm - Summer BOOST Night Out Event)
  • The times do not reflect 30 minute lunch break
Employees must attend full-day site set-up and training during these dates. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Review information and correspond as necessary with Office of Out of School Time (OST) central office staff and site-based leadership team members.
  • Review curriculum independently to prepare for the summer.
  • Participate in pre-program professional development and training sessions.
  • Participate in Summer BOOST Night Out family engagement event.
During Camp Work consists of 21 days which includes the following aspects:
  • Monday through Friday, June 26 - July 26, 2024
  • Please note: the first day of camp starts on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
  • No program on July 4 - 5, 2024.
  • Position Hours: 7:45am - 3:45pm
  • Students Hours: 8:00am-3:30pm
Post-Camp Work consists of 5.5 hours which include:
  • Monday, July 29, 2024 (7:45am - 1:45pm)
  • Employees must attend full-day site breakdown on this date.

Salary
Below is a breakdown of how the total compensation is allotted:
- Pre-Camp Compensation = 30 Hours at Workshop Rate ($15/hr)

- During Camp Compensation = 21 Days at 100% Daily Rate (EAIIIA Step 1 Daily Rate = $181.96/day)

- Post-Camp Compensation = 5.5 Hours at Workshop Rate ($15/hr)
Please note: If you did not hold an EAIIIA Learning Support Aide ? ESL position at Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) during the 2023-2024 school year, the Daily Rate will be based on Step 1 on the EAIIIA Salary Schedule.?
Qualifications
Candidates must be enthusiastic about the Summer BOOST. mission and the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district. In addition, we are seeking candidates with:

- A High School diploma or equivalent is required.

- Written and oral proficiency in English and
Ukrainian is a prerequisite for this position. Please include language proficiencies on resume.

- Experience working with refugee students where English is their second language, specifically Ukrainian is preferred.

- Vocational experience in an urban setting is preferred.

- Familiarity with various student assistive devices is also preferred.

Essential Job Functions
1. Assisting the classroom teacher with the use of instructional materials and technology.

2. Making phone calls, arranging meetings, and facilitating other related parent outreach in Ukrainian.

3. Maintaining confidentiality when discussing individual students and/or families.

4. Implementing culturally responsive instructional techniques with refugee students from Ukraine.

5. Utilizing culturally responsive behavioral strategies with refugee students from Ukraine.

6. Assisting the teacher with class preparation and/or lesson implementation.

7. Supporting ESL instruction in small student groups as needed.

8. Adhering to all building level duties and responsibilities.

9. Preparing and organizing teacher materials and classroom supplies as necessary.

10. Supervising and assisting students in the completion of their assignments.

11. Monitoring students in the classroom, at lunch, and at recess, as well as in transit from one area to another.

12. Assisting with the implementation of the prescribed course of ESL study and behavior management plans for each student.

13. Assisting in completion of all clerical duties.

14. Assisting with student transportation, such as meeting a cab outside or assisting students with boarding the correct school bus.

15. Assisting in the maintenance and care of equipment.

16. Assisting on fields trips.
Additional Job Information
Staff Absence Policy:?
Staff are expected to be present for their entire work schedule during the duration of the Summer BOOST program which may include Pre-Camp, During Camp, and Post Camp days/hours. Additionally, staff work schedules include but may not be limited to: planning, meetings, professional development, site set-up, site breakdown and camper days. The exact work schedule for this position is listed in the Position Summary section of this job description.

Sick Leave will be awarded to PFT represented employees between June 26,2024 and July 26,2024 based on Article 127, Section 2a, 2b, 6a1,6a2, and 6b of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers (PFT) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Any additional absences during the work schedule will be docked from the staffs pay. If any staff is absent more than 2 days, the staff may be removed from their position and will only be paid for the days worked. Sick days may not be used in lieu of workshop hours.
