Pitt County Schools is Hiring a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (District-wide) Near Greenville, NC

Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Position: 10 month, Full time 

Reports to: Coordinator of Specialized Programs, EC Director 

Qualifications

  • North Carolina licensure or certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

  • Special Education background is preferred

  • Experience working with visually impaired students, preferably in an educational setting

  • Strong knowledge of adaptive techniques, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for students with visual impairments

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with students, parents, educators, and colleagues

Responsibilities

  • Provide Visual Impairment (VI) Services as described by DPI Guidelines for Exceptional Children

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the visual needs and learning preferences of the student including generating professional evaluation reports

  • Develop and implement individualized educational plans that address the unique needs and goals of the student

  • Articulate the needs and interventions of students in IEP meetings both verbally and in IEP database systems

  • Provide direct instruction and support to the visually impaired student, utilizing appropriate adaptive techniques and tools

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure the student's needs are met effectively

  • Provide guidance and support to other school staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment with access to instruction

  • Adapt and modify educational materials to accommodate the student's visual impairment

  • Work in collaboration with other staff members to ensure the student’s success

  • Understanding of Regular Curriculum and Extended Content Curriculum, Grades K-12

  • Document services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instruction

  • Provide progress reports as required by the IEP 

  • Document services provided including attending, direction instruction content, and student response to instruction

  • Maintain VI equipment, provide inventory updates, and ensure that broken devices are repaired

  • Ability to travel between school locations

  • Physical requirement: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work
