Pitt County Schools is Hiring a Mechanic III Near Greenville, NC


Position Title: Mechanic III

Reports To: Shop Supervisor/Inspection Supervisor

Supervises: No OneSkills, Abilities Required:
Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines, and all other mechanical components of school buses and service vehicles.

Considerable knowledge of the types and use of tools and equipment commonly found in automotive repair shops.

Considerable knowledge of the methods used in adjusting and repairing the electrical wiring and generating systems of automotive equipment.

Ability to determine the causes of the methods to be used in the repair of improperly operating automotive equipment.

Ability to work independently diagnosing and repairing buses on the road.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for considerable periods. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally , and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Meet physical fitness requirements as outlined by Federal and State CDL/School Bus licensing requirements. Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work

Education & Training:
Five years experience in troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of heavy diesel 
powered vehicles or gasoline automotive equipment

Technical training in heavy diesel powered vehicles or gasoline automotive equipment preferred.

 

Terms of Employment: 12 months

 

Probationary Periods:
Initial employment 90 days
CDL “B” with applicable endorsements (P,S,T) 90 daysDPI Bus Inspection Certification 12 months

Responsibilities:

  1. Identify and diagnose complex malfunctions with advanced diagnostic test equipment (Prolink & Laptop with vendor software).

  1. Test repaired and replaced equipment for compliance to state standards.

  1. Operate specialized power tools including but not limited to, head light machine, voltage regulator, tap and dye set, A/C recovery system etc.

  1. Repair and replace all Hydraulic and Air brake system components including antilock brake systems.

  1. Straighten damaged frames and other body components.

  1. Repair and replace U-joints, differentials, drive-lines, engines, transmissions, and front end and steering components.

  1. Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning.

  1. Repair, replace, or adjust starters and alternators, transmissions and clutch assemblies.

  1. Change tires from vehicle as well as removing and mounting on rims and using tire-balancing equipment.

  1. Understand oral and written instructions and interpret wiring diagrams, specifications and computerized reference repair manuals.

  1. Perform North Carolina vehicle inspections on school owned vehicles.

  1. Provide instruction to lower level mechanics in repair and maintenance procedures.

  1. Accept rotation on after hours pager service.

  1. Project positive image for this department.

  1. Perform any task listed on Pitt County Schools Mechanic 1 or Mechanic 2 job description.

  1. Perform other job duties as assigned by the Shop Supervisor, Inspection Supervisor, Director of Bus Operations, and Transportation Director or their designee.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of manuals, warranties, forms, records, etc. Requires the ability to prepare forms, records, etc., using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively in mechanical terminology.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; to calculate decimals and percentages.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using power equipment tools.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as mechanical equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of colors.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear. Talking; expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken works. Hearing; perceiving nature of sounds by ear. Must be able to communicate via telephone and two-way radio.
