Registered Nurse - ED and Medical/Surgical Unit

Job Description

Reports to: Charge Nurse, ED/Medical-Surgical Unit

FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-exempt, Hourly

A. SUMMARY

The professional registered nurse is responsible for delivery of patient care utilizing the nursing process. The registered nurse will provide age-specific nursing care for the infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. The registered nurse directs and guides patient and family teaching activities as well as the activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing practice.

B. QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate Degree graduate of an accredited school of nursing. A current active Colorado RN license without restrictions is required.
  2. Current BLS certification.
  3. Exhibits knowledge of confidentiality principles.
  4. Is knowledgeable of current trends in nursing practice.
  5. Demonstrates honesty and integrity at all times.
  6. Possesses appropriate interpersonal communication skills necessary to deal effectively with patients, families, hospital and medical staff, and visitors.
  7. Possesses teaching abilities.

C. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  1. ACLS, and TNCC required within six months of date of employment or transfer.
  2. PALS or ENPC required within six months of date of employment.
  3. Experience working as an RN in a healthcare facility required. Medical/Surgical or ED experience preferred.

D. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Implement physicians’ orders, administer medications, start IVs, perform treatments, procedures and special tests, and document treatment as required by company policy and local/state/federal rules and regulations.
  2. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients' conditions.
  3. Assess and evaluate patients' needs for, and responses to, care rendered.
  4. Apply sound nursing judgment in patient care management decisions.
  5. Provide primary and emergency care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  6. Administer over-the-counter and prescription medications as ordered.
  7. Collaborate with the nursing team to create a Plan of Care for all patients.
  8. Direct and guide ancillary personnel and maintain standards of professional nursing.
  9. Maintaining accurate, complete health care records and reports.
  10. Administering medications to patients and monitoring them for side effects and reactions.
  11. Prescribing assistive medical devices and related treatments.
  12. Recording patient vital signs and medical information.
  13. Ordering medical diagnostic and clinical tests.

Working Conditions/Environment

  1. Requires sitting, standing bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving intermittently during working hours.
  2. Is required to function in stressful situations, which require critical thinking and simultaneous resolution of multiple patient care issues.
  3. Must be able to cope with life and death situations as well as other unique situations that pertain to patient care and nursing practice.
  4. May be responsible for accompanying patients during a transfer to another facility.
  5. Subject to frequent interruptions.
  6. Requires taking call and working extra shifts during high volume/census, low staffing, or emergent periods.
  7. Must be able to consistently demonstrate the “seven rights” of medication administration.
  8. Must be able to follow narcotic control policies.
  9. Adheres to the safety guidelines as outlined by the facility and reports unsafe equipment, areas, practices, etc., as required by policy.
  10. Adheres to the standards and policies of the corporate compliance program, including the duty to comply with applicable laws and regulation, and report to a designated manager (or employer hotline) any suspected unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful acts or practices

Physical Requirements

  1. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  2. Must possess visual/auditory senses, or use prosthetic devices that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of the position will be met.
  3. Must be able to function able to function and make decisions independently.
  4. Demonstrates ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  5. Must be able to cope with the physical and emotional stresses of the job. When under stress, demonstrates good communication, management, and interpersonal skills.
  6. Must possess personal integrity, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with other personnel.
  7. Must observe and adhere to proper principles of body mechanics.

Professional Growth

  1. Promotes life-long learning; updates knowledge on a continual basis. Actively participates in seminars, conferences, and inservices. Reads current nursing literature. Shares knowledge with others.
  2. Participates in committee work, policy revision, or other unit activities/duties as assigned.
