Position Description

Salary Grade: 2

Pay Range

Hiring Range: $16.54 - $19.43 Per Hour
Full Range: $16.54 - $22.33 Per Hour
Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.
Plans, organizes, and supervises the work and maintenance activities of custodial workers engaged in cleaning and maintaining buildings, office facilities, and surrounding areas. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Corrections Custodian, which is assigned to an adult correctional facility and its participation in inmate security.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)
Plans, organizes, supervises, and occasionally participates in the work of custodial workers
engaged in cleaning of buildings, offices facilities, and surrounding areas;
Trains and instructs custodial workers in proper methods and procedures of custodial work and infection control techniques;
Inspects completed work to determine conformance to accepted standards;
Supervises and participates in loading, unloading, and moving supplies, equipment, and furniture;
Orders and maintains an inventory of various custodial equipment and supplies;
Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports;
Prepares cleaning and disinfectant solutions and assures proper disposal;
May perform more difficult maintenance tasks;
May inspect equipment to determine needs for new parts, repairs, overhaul, and replacement;
May distribute and collect keys and or pagers.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Knowledge of:

  • the principles and practices of effective supervision;
  • the materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning buildings and grounds and related custodial activities;
  • equipment repair and maintenance needs;
  • occupational hazards, safety practices, and infection control.
Skill in:
  • using cleaning tools, equipment, and supplies;
  • assigning and supervising the work of others;
  • preparing, using, and disposal of cleaning and disinfectant solutions;
  • training employees in custodial tasks;
  • repairing equipment;
  • communicating effectively,
  • performing heavy lifting and routine manual cleaning tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

(1) Three years of commercial, institutional, or industrial custodial experience including three years of supervisory experience.
OR
(2) One year of experience with Pima County as a Senior Custodian or Senior Corrections Custodian.

Preferred Qualifications
: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):
  • Minimum one (1) year commercial janitorial experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year commercial floor care processes and related equipment.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with commercial landscape inspection and processes.
  • Minimum one (1) year of commercial pest control inspections and processes.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record. Some positions in this classification may require an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) regular Clearance Card at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain/maintain the required clearance/licensure shall be grounds for termination.
Special Notice Items: The ability to obtain a jail pass is required. The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Department of Labor Regulation CFR Part 1910.1030 requires notification that some positions in this category may have a moderate risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. In accordance with OSHA and Pima County guidelines and regulations, Hepatitis B vaccine, tuberculosis screening and respiratory protection training, safety equipment, and personal protective clothing will be provided.
Physical/Sensory Requirements: A post-job-offer physical is required.Physical and sensory abilities will be determined by position.
