Pierce Transit is recruiting for a conscientious Parts Technician to join our team!
Pierce Transit provides regular services to over half a million people. The person selected for this position will support the highly dedicated technicians who take care of our facilities and fleet; comprised of nearly 300 buses, as well as 97 SHUTTLE vans, and 366 Vanpool vans.
 
The individual we are looking for is a well-rounded professional with the skills and abilities to step into a high-performing team. The ideal candidate will come with some experience working within a parts environment or as an automotive and/or heavy equipment technician.
 
 Some of the regular duties in this role will include:
  • Ordering and receiving supplies and equipment.
  • Storing and issuing supplies and equipment.
  • Maintaining manual and automated records of inventory.
  • Ordering, receiving and distributing vehicle parts.
  • Partnering with mechanics to research and obtain parts for various vehicles, equipment and facilities.

The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  1. Controls inventory; orders, issues, ships, receives and stocks vehicle, equipment and facilities maintenance parts; assures accuracy of shipments against invoices, packing slips, purchase orders and specifications.
  2. Prepares purchase orders and checks materials for proper quantity; records and files using on-line computerized warehousing system.
  3. Resolves issues with shipments and handles warranty returns.
  4. Assembles and fills orders by purchase order; issues items from stock in accordance with established methods.
  5. Drives Agency vehicles to pick up and deliver parts and materials.
  6. Helps determine sources of supply, availability, and costs for auto parts, bus parts and facilities maintenance parts.
  7. Assists in maintaining up-to-date information on all parts, materials, and supply catalogs pertaining to Agency requirements.
  8. Maintains a computer system to ensure delivery of routine items in an acceptable period of time; expedites delivery of items that are high priority.
  9. Receives and responds to Agency requests or requisitions for purchase of materials, parts, and supplies.
  10. Updates reference materials and maintains technical library.
  11. Assists shop technicians by retrieving and ordering parts for existing work orders.
  12. Serves as backup for Parts Assistant.
  13. Operates equipment such as forklifts and pallet trucks to move heavy materials and equipment.
  14. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  15. Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  16. Uses computers and catalogs to determine correct parts, pricing and availability of parts for all Agency vehicles and equipment.
  17. Order specialty parts to make determinations regarding quality, price and shipping availability. 
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic customer service techniques; basic arithmetic and reading; automotive and/or heavy equipment parts; facilities parts, materials, supplies and their uses; inventory systems and procedures.

Skill in:

  • Accurately performing mathematical computations and repetitive activities; performing or being able to learn computerized warehousing methods and procedures; navigating and understanding parts manuals for a wide variety of vehicles; safely operating warehouse equipment such as forklifts and pallet trucks; reading, interpreting, and utilizing materials catalogs; operating office equipment such as personal computer and calculator; speaking clearly, listening effectively, assimilating information, using sound judgment, following written and oral instructions; managing multiple tasks simultaneously; promoting positive customer service relations demonstrating courtesy to customers and members of the public; maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships; providing good customer service under stress; driving all job-related vehicles and maintaining a valid Washington State driver's license. 

Required: 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and one year of experience in a parts environment or two years' experience as a heavy duty or automotive mechanic.

Desired: 

  • Some computer experience to include MS Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Experience in a facilities maintenance warehouse or in a customer service environment with telephone and in-person contact.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification as a Parts Specialist.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license. Must have the ability to perform the essential functions as described above including the ability to maneuver up to fifty pounds and stand for long periods of time. Must be flexible and available to work any shift as assigned. This includes day, swing, or graveyard shifts, weekends, and holidays.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Wages:
This is a bargaining unit position and applicants will be placed at Step 1 ($27.50) upon hire.
Work Schedule: 
Must be available to work alternate shifts (day, swing, and graveyard), weekends, and/or holidays.
Shift differential:
Employees are eligible for differential pay when working during the following hours:
  • 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. – One dollar ($1.00) per hour
  • 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. - Two dollars and fifty cents ($2.50) per hour

Certification Pay:
Upon completion of the initial probationary period, employees will be eligible for
certification pay subject to the following parameters:
  1. An additional twenty-five cents ($.25) per hour will be paid to Parts Technicians and Lead Parts Technicians who obtain and maintain ASE Parts Specialist certifications P1 Medium-Heavy Truck Parts Specialist and/or P2 Automobile Parts Specialist.
  2. The combination of certification pay shall be limited to an additional fifty cents ($0.50) per hour per employee.
  3. It shall be the employee’s responsibility to renew or otherwise keep current all certifications/technical licenses for which they are receiving this pay and regularly provide this information to the Employer.
  4. This pay will be for all hours paid to include overtime; however, this shall not be changed by any overtime multiplier.
  5. Agency will reimburse successfully passed exams for certifications which have been preapproved by the agency for the preauthorized classifications.
Environment: 
May be required to work at a desk or other work station for prolonged periods; Must have the ability to concentrate with frequent interruptions and general warehouse/shop noise. Any required education must come from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U S Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent.
