DescriptionPosition SummaryWhy It's a Great OpportunityPlanning and Public Works (PPW) has an exciting opportunity at the supervisory level in our Long Range Planning Division. The Long Range Planning Division is focused on developing planning and land use policies and regulations for unincorporated Pierce County. In this position, you will supervise and work alongside a team focused on a variety of projects including but not limited to the County's Comprehensive Plan, agricultural and open space programs, and various special projects. How To Be Successful In The RoleThis position requires you to work across PPW divisions, other County departments, agencies, and stakeholders to address topics such as growth management, affordable housing, environmental impacts, capital facilities planning, economic development, climate change, social and health needs and much more. Ideally, we want a candidate that is skilled in data collection and analysis as well as public outreach and facilitation. Strong project management and organizational skills, knowledge and proven experience in their respective subject matter, and the ability to present information to a variety of stakeholders and the public will be key. This position should be prepared to act as the project manager and lead on significant deliverables like the Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update. Your Future In This RoleYou will have an opportunity to work alongside a diverse and talented team of PPW professionals, agencies, and community leaders to support planning activities by problem-solving and developing innovative solutions to ensure the best services possible for the citizens of Pierce County. Your work will directly shape how Pierce County communities grow by developing foundational guiding policy documents that guide County programs and plans over time.
Throughout the onboarding process, you will meet with the County Planning Manager regularly to discuss expectations and set goals for yourself as well as introduce you to the current policies and procedures, technology/software, and Pierce County Code. As a supervisor, you will be part of the PPW Expanded Management Team and Pierce County offers leadership and professional development throughout your career to ensure your success.
Core Daily Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate work assignments for an assigned work unit to assure adherence to prescribed time lines and compliance with departmental procedures.
  • Provide leadership and project management over larger and more significant projects and programs.
  • Coordinate work with others across departments and organizations on the development of various plans.
  • Participate in and supervise the preparation and presentation of reports and information and present to County Officials, departments, external entities, and the general public regarding a wide range of planning functions and other related areas.
  • Perform a range of supervisory duties including recommending promotional and disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, approving leave requests and overtime, and assuring adequate coverage during staff absences, performance evaluations, and develop and establish performance measures and standards.
  • Oversee the professional development of employees and provide guidance and technical expertise, and training to staff.
  • Oversee development, preparation and presentation of department deliverables including staff reports, findings of fact, draft policies and regulations, and other documents and exhibits.
  • Provide guidance and oversight of research and analysis for various statistical and/or technical data to apply to a wide range of planning functions.
  • Represent the Department at internal and external meetings.

Qualifications
  • Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree in planning or related field.
  • Four years local, county, or state planning experience.
  • One year of lead worker and/or supervisory experience.
  • Positions in specific program areas may require program-related experience, education, and/or training.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Masters' Degree is preferred.
Special Requirements and/or Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license, or the ability to obtain the license within 30 days of employment, or otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position.

  • Salary: $97,950.68-$125,865.06 per year
