As Pierce County grows and creates a higher demand on utilities, there is an increased need for Engineering Technicians oversee and monitoring that growth. In this role you will have direct responsibility for preparing road vacations, road closures, license agreements, franchise agreements, oversize permits, and other specially assigned tasks. This great team ensures that when local utilities are moved, expanded, and repaired, that it happens according to code and has been properly permitted. You and your teammates will be directly involved in County’s progress and growth ensuring the smooth delivery of infrastructure improvements and increase services to County communities!

How to be Successful in the Role: 
As an Engineering Technician 3 with Pierce County, you will utilize your experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and learn or already have knowledge of the Pierce County GIS system. Researching records is extremely important in this role. You will use public websites as well as internal data bases and other historical records daily. You and your team will contribute to multiple projects, updates, and meetings which make communication, collaboration, and time management essential every day. Your past work ethic, time prioritization, decisiveness, and self-responsibility will ensure your success in this role.

Your Future in this Role: 
Supporting the County Engineer, a typical project involves various issues that impact Pierce County Rights-of-Way. Opportunities for various certifications outside of the county are available with support from the team. Core Daily Responsibilities:
  • Research records involving Pierce County Rights-of-Way using internal and public online databases, hard copy files, maps and other records.
  • Provides technical information and explains policies and procedures to the public, other staff or groups in person, on the telephone or in writing.
  • Preparation and processing of utility franchise agreements, road vacations, and county license agreements.
  • Prepare and process oversize load permits, general right-of-way permits, and road closure permits as needed.
  • Take an active part in group meetings and provide opinions on best ways to solve right-of-way matters.
  • Develops and maintains project files and other records.
  • Attend Council meetings as required (Occasional).

  • Two years of college or post-high school technical training and two or more years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute equally for the recruiting requirements.
Special Requirements: 
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Washington State Driver's license or otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position is required.
  • Satisfactory physical condition, as evidenced by a County-approved physical examination, may be required prior to appointment to the position.
