Pierce County is Hiring a Building Inspection Supervisor (Inspection Services Section) - Development Services Division Near Tacoma, WA

This is a full-time position operating in a hybrid work environment (in office, from home, in the field).

As an Inspection Services team supervisor, you will oversee a group of 10 building inspectors with support from a building inspector lead. You will help to streamline operations and improve compliance with regulatory standards. Your leadership will be instrumental in helping the section evolve into a next-generation Inspection Services Section by leveraging technology, innovation, and collaboration. Your Future in this Role: 
You will work closely with the PPW management team and be a key member of the Development Services Division, who will help guide you through onboarding and integration into the Department, as well as how to lead in a large, matrix organization. As a PPW supervisor, you will also be part of the Expanded Management Team and expected to complete the County’s Bronze Leadership Certification program. Core Daily Responsibilities: 
  • Provide daily supervision, coaching, and technical direction to the building inspectors.
  • Conduct field inspections with inspectors to review unusual problems and to provide direction and assistance in resolving customer questions and complaints.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of division goals, objectives, practices, and procedures.
  • Effectively persuade, inform, educate, train, solicit information, motivate, and direct a wide variety of individuals or groups.
  • Investigate complaints concerning alleged building code violations, evaluate damaged structures, and coordinate section activities with other County sections or departments.

  • Additional education or experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of this position may substitute on a year for year basis.
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in Construction Management, Architecture, or Engineering.
  • Five or more years of relevant experience.
  • One year in a supervisory/lead capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional I.C.C. certification as a Fire Code Inspector or Building Official is desirable.
Licenses or Certifications
Professional Certification required in the following categories:
1. ICC Building Inspector (Residential and Commercial)
2. ICC Mechanical (Inspector or Plans Examiner)
3. ICC or IAPMO Plumbing (Inspector or Plans Examiner)
I.C.C. certification as a Commercial Combination Inspector may substitute for certification as a Plumbing Inspector. Must maintain all job-related certifications.
