Position Summary

Job Summary

The mission of Pierce College is to create quality educational opportunities to a diverse community of learners to thrive in an evolving world.

This position helps advance the equity-centered mission of Pierce College by connecting students with valuable learning and campus resources. Instructional Technicians perform tutoring and departmental administrative functions to support students in their academic skills development and success. Responsibilities include facilitating 1:1 and small group tutoring across modalities (in-person, online, and in the classroom), record-keeping, promoting academic support services to students, working collaboratively and communicatively with supervisor, colleagues, staff, and faculty, using a variety of online learning platforms and software.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions:
All program services are conducted through a collaborative process that includes the leadership from department partners to ensure the inclusion of diverse perspectives and maintains consistency in program offerings and practices across the district.

Direct academic support to students

  • Provide 1:1 and small group academic support to science students in a variety of delivery modalities (in-person, online, and in the classroom).
  • Provide classroom-embedded support to science courses in a variety of modalities: in the physical classroom, on the learning management system, and other learning systems.
  • Provide holistic, caring, proactive customer service to our students as a representative of Pierce College.
  • Actively contribute to a welcoming, nurturing, friendly environment for students who engage with Pierce College academic support departments and programs
  • Demonstrate communication and student interactions that promote and maintain a harmonious and cooperative learning community of practice with your departmental colleagues.
  • Promote Pierce College academic support departments to students, staff, and faculty as programs that are compassionate, equity-based, antiracist academic support services that encourage a non-deficit approach to academic support.
  • Develop sufficient knowledge of academic and student support programs to assist and refer students to applicable and appropriate services at Pierce College that meet the needs of the student
Program support
  • Provide coaching or mentoring to PT Hourly and Student Staff in one or more science subject-specific areas
  • Maintain accuracy in program scheduling and record-keeping used to collect, coordinate, and implement program services.
  • Utilize program Canvas pages, scheduling systems, and other learning management systems, as necessary

Qualifications

Qualifications
Required Education:

  • Associate's Degree with a major in a natural science (e.g. physics, chemistry, geology, biology, etc.)
Required Experience:
  • Experience working with students who have been marginalized/minoritized, including those who may be economically disadvantaged, first-generation, and/or first time in college.
  • Ability to effectively juggle competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Special Requirements:
  • The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment.

Terms of Employment:

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) classified, overtime-eligible position with the Pierce College District. This position is permanent after serving a 6-month probationary period. The primary work location will be at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom campus. Occasional travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekend work, and occasional travel as required. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. This position requires regular and consistent attendance.

Salary & Benefits:

The starting salary of this position is $3,883 monthly dependent upon qualifications, with periodic increments up to $4,602 monthly. However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. A comprehensive health care benefits package for you and your dependents includes medical, dental and vision insurance. Physical Work Environment:

This position is required to work indoors in an open office environment, which requires visual concentration on detail, dexterity, precision, and is subject to frequent noise and interruptions.
