Job Summary:
The Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical (IC&E) Technician is responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical power systems, and electronic and electromechanical control systems. Systems and electrical power equipment to include, but not limited to fuel gas control valves, flow, level, and pressure switches and transmitters, flow meters, gas chromatograph, electrical power meters, electrical protective relays, programmable logic controllers (PLC), engine control systems, power transformers, motor control centers, generator breakers, and generators. The IC&E Technician is also responsible for electrical power system maintenance and troubleshooting as well as troubleshooting and maintaining the integrity of plant data communication networks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, maintain, and calibrate indicating and controlling digital and electronic instruments that measure and control process variables, such as pressure, flow, level, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition using hand tools and precision instruments.
  • Interpret technical documentation: data sheets, vendor manuals, troubleshooting flowcharts, etc. Interpret/ prepare technical drawings from simple schematics to complex P&IDs, instrument loop diagrams, single line diagrams, and PLC ladder logic diagrams.
  • Understand digital control systems and valves, transmitters, and transducers.
  • Configure digital transmitters. Interpret data from advanced diagnostic programs for instrumentation.
  • Disassemble malfunctioning instruments, examine, and test mechanism and circuitry for defects.
  • Troubleshoot equipment in or out of control loops and replace or repair defective parts.
  • Reassemble instruments, test, and calibrate assembly for conformance with specifications using test instruments such as multimeters, manometers, smart communicators, and pressure instruments.
  • Maintain and control spare parts inventory and assist in budget planning and control.
  • Inspect instruments periodically and make minor calibration adjustments to assure they are functioning within specified controlled variables.
Job Requirements:
  • Able to repair control valves and positioners (including actuators and controllers).
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair low voltage electrical control systems.
  • Knowledge of medium voltage electrical equipment rated 480 volts through 5,000 volts.
  • Knowledge of 480 volt through 5,000-volt cable terminations and splices.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair low voltage electrical control systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical components and systems.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform switching on High Voltage systems High Voltage systems (up to 538kV).
  • Troubleshooting skills for 480-volt through 4160-volt motors and circuit breaker controls up to 538kV.
  • Knowledge of DC systems and relaying, able to troubleshoot and recommend repair of DC circuitry and relaying systems.
  • Ability to understand Electrical Area Classification and installation requirement for electrical equipment in hazardous areas.
  • Understanding of digital control systems and valves, transmitters, and transducers.
Physical Requirements:
  • Working in varied outdoor environments such as all-weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.
  • The frequent use of protective equipment (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.) may be required. Work with hazardous materials may also be required.
  • Working in proximity to high voltages and current with proper training and equipment, operating heavy equipment and rolling stock and entering confined spaces or hazardous environments may be required while often being exposed to equipment and machinery noises.
  • Duties require walking, standing for extended periods of time, crawling, stooping, sitting, climbing vertical and inclined ladders and stairs, operation of large valves and other tasks requiring up to 100 lbs. of pulling or turning force, and lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.
  • Eye and hand coordination are required to operate switches, pushbuttons, and other controls.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
Education / Experience:
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Trade school, military, or technical training school desired.
  • 5 years of experience in instrument and controls of electrical applications in power plant or power distribution environment required.
  • Siemens T3000 and PLC experience a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience with NFPA 70e and NERC requirements.
