San Joaquin Delta College is Hiring a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Services Coordinator Near Stockton, CA

Description

To oversee, coordinate and participate in interpretation services and activities for students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing; to select and assign interpreters and CART captioners for classroom communication services; to provide services as an interpreter; and to perform a variety of administrative tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Oversee and coordinate interpreting and CART services and activities for students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing; perform interpreting services both inside the classroom and at school related activities as appropriate.
  2. Provide sign language and English interpreting and transliterating for D/deaf or hard of hearing students.
  3. Assign and schedule full and part time interpreter and CART providers for various class room interpretation activities; train staff in the usage of various devices for the deaf and hard of hearing and protocol; maintain records of interpreter absences. Verify and calculate staff payroll.
  4. Coordinate and schedule interpreters and CART providers in a variety of classes to meet the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing students; locate substitute interpreters and CART captioners as needed; evaluate hourly and staff interpreters and CART captioners in classes.
  5. Maintain a variety of records to track student absences and changes in schedules for students, staff, and agencies.
  6. Confer with faculty as needed regarding deaf and hard of hearing students, interpreters and CART captioners in their classes; answer related questions.
  7. Maintain contacts with other colleges in the area regarding services for deaf and hard of hearing students in order to maintain consistency and parity.
  8. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing interpretation services; implement policies and procedures.
  9. Monitor program performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures.
  10. Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures. Receive, verify, and calculate agency invoices prior to Director's signature.
  11. Assess and provide feedback to interpreters and CART captioners in the work environment.
  12. Serve as liaison between D/deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, and staff.
  13. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the fields of interpreting and CART
  14. Oversee the work of outside contractors.
  15. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services and activities of an interpretation services program.
  • Deaf culture.
  • Methods and techniques of signing and interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Advanced interpretation and application techniques of American Sign Language.
  • Use and operation of various devices for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Current CART equipment and software.
  • Principles and practices of program development and implementation.
  • Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, word processing software and database software.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and NCRA Code of Professional Ethics.
Ability to :

  • Coordinate and schedule, interpreter/CART services for the D/deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing services.
  • Perform advanced interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Screen, schedule and assess the skills of interpreter and CART provider staff.
  • Operate and train staff in the use of technical devices for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Communicate effectively to the D/deaf and hard of hearing using American Sign Language and/or contact signing.
  • Translate from spoken English to American Sign Language and from American Sign Language into spoken English.
  • Interpret and explain school policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time; extensive fine manipulation of hands.
Education and Experience Requirements:

Education :

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in education, sign language or a related field and four years of increasingly responsible American Sign Language interpretation experience preferably within an educational setting, with two years of deaf/hard of hearing service coordination.

OR

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in education, sign language, or a related field and a minimum of six years of American Sign Language interpretation experience.
Licenses/Special Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid National Interpretation and Transliteration Certificate issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
