As a teacher at Phoenix, you will play a crucial role in our mission to challenge and support young people with an academically rigorous and individually tailored curriculum. In addition to teaching academic lessons, you will serve as an adviser and mentor for our scholars, providing them with the necessary support and resources to succeed academically and become economically secure in their future. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in physical education, as well as supporting the socio-emotional needs of our scholars. Your role will also involve modeling and promoting the Phoenix mission by setting high expectations for scholars and advocating for equity in the communities we serve.
Qualities of a Phoenix staff member:

  • Ability to Put Scholars First: You will go above and beyond to ensure the mastery of skills and the development of positive self-identity in our scholars, preparing them for success in college and beyond. You will find opportunities to engage in teaching and learning with scholars, building supportive relationships and never taking things personally.
  • Eager to Learn Under Pressure: You must be able to learn on the go in a fast-paced, ever-evolving, urgent environment. You should have the desire to receive direct feedback and the ability to implement it quickly.
  • Humility: You will approach problem-solving with curiosity and a desire to understand the perspectives of others. You will carry an internalized sense of continuous learning and be open-minded and willing to make mistakes and learn from them.
  • Experience with Low-Income Communities: You should have experience working across cultures and serving low-income communities and/or academically-disconnected adolescents.
  • Ability to Find Inspiration In the Small Things: You must have the ability to find humor, inspiration, success, and joy in day-to-day interactions with scholars and the larger Phoenix community.
  • Personal Commitment to Cultural Proficiency and Ongoing Development: You will be an ongoing learner about diversity, equity, and inclusion, seeking to understand how your self-identity and experiences impact and interact with your work.
Responsibilities:
  • Teach a skill-based elementary physical education/health curriculum that incorporates age-appropriate health lessons covering a variety of topics.
  • Participate in curriculum review and design.
  • Implement a variety of effective instructional strategies consistent with lesson objectives.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students regularly and provide progress reports.
  • Participate in weekly meetings, supervision, and meet or exceed deliverables according to the school Accountability Plan.
  • Create required curriculum supplements and weekly overviews.
  • Upload and share all planning materials and planned lessons following Phoenix protocol.
  • Collaborate with staff to best reach all scholars.
Non-curricular Responsibilities:
  • Internalize the mission and make it central to all decisions and actions inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Communicate with parents/adult supporters through phone calls, email correspondence, and/or in-person meetings.
  • Commit to professional growth through consistent feedback and reflection.
  • Seek to create personal, warm relationships with ALL scholars, conveying the importance of academic work and demonstrating that you will not give up on them.
  • Communicate scholar support needs with the Director of School Culture and Social Worker when necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 1 year of direct scholar-serving (teaching, tutoring, academic support, etc.) experience preferred.
