Summary: Working directly with the Hospitality Manager, will be responsible for directly supervising the tasting rooms and retail staff in the absence of the Hospitality Manager and overseeing essential operation tasks while modeling superior customer service and business standards. The position will ensure tasting rooms and retail operations run smoothly, handling issues during regular business activity providing direction, communication, and workflow.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervisory:

  1. Support the Hospitality Manager in hiring, training, supervising, and mentoring staff.
  2. Create a positive and respectful work environment for tasting rooms and retail staff, consistent with Phillips Farms-Michael David Winery values by leading through example.
  3. Assist in managing tasting room and retail operations, including conducting daily opening and closing procedures, cash handling, accurate pricing, and inventory keeping in the POS.
  4. Research and order wine-related merchandise and apparel.
  5. Act as a winery ambassador to all guests, whether industry partners, wine club members, private tasting groups, tours, or the general public.
    1. Supports the Hospitality Manager with special events, including coordinating appointments for group tastings, club events, VIP tasting experiences, and annual on-site events.
  6. Create compelling and revenue-generating visitor programs in conjunction with the Hospitality Manager.
  7. Create reports and spreadsheets to track and document tasting rooms, retail activities, sales, and trends. 
  8. Train and retrain new and current staff in sales processes and customer service skills and update the training manual.
  9. Ensure staff takes rest and lunch breaks required by law, providing on-floor support as needed. 
    1. Address staff and customer concerns and disputes professionally and positively while remaining calm and focused under pressure by effectively having a solution-based approach in all interactions.
  10. Possess commanding knowledge of POS system, including performing opening and closing procedures, updating back office, adding retail items, updating pricing, monitoring profit margins, and entering new wines and vintages into POS.
  11. Superuser knowledge of Microsoft Office, Wine Direct, TOAST, and TOCK.
  12. Troubleshoot POS or other system issues while working with on-site and off-site IT personnel.
  13. Ensure all retail and tasting room activities are conducted following the company's policies, procedures, and applicable laws.

Tasting Rooms

  1. Achievement of retail goals, wine club sign-up goals, and sales goals at the winery.
  2. Monitor and keep track of all visitors, those that taste, and wine club conversion rates.
  3. Effectively supervise tasting room employees, so they execute flawless, anticipatory customer service while achieving sales goals set forth by the company.
  4. Manage wine inventory to include transfers and movement of wines between all retail locations.
    1. Present and describe Michael David wines to educate guests and staff in our tasting rooms and act as an ambassador in presenting the family story.
  5. Assist with planning, executing, and achieving sales forecast through tasting room activities and events open to club members and the public at the winery or off-site locations.
  6. Undertake various hospitality duties, assist with wine club and private events, and conduct private on-site and offsite tasting programs.
  7. Occasionally represent the winery for wine festivals, off-site tastings, winemaker dinners, or any event as assigned.
