Job Description

I. Organizational Overview

Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB), officially launched in June of 2015, is a community-built youth development and community empowerment organization that leverages the iconic game of basketball to help today’s urban youth overcome the most urgent and systemic issues facing underserved communities. A diverse and impassioned group of individuals, including leaders from the grass-roots to the tree-tops, have been working diligently to execute upon this mission by building an impactful program, a robust and sustainable organization, and ultimately our world-class ‘Sixth Man’ Center to help uplift thousands of children, youth, and families for generations to come.

II. Primary Scope of Duties

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Maintenance Engineer will play a crucial role in maintaining the operational efficiency, safety, and cleanliness of the Alan Horwitz Sixth Man Center. This role demands a proactive approach to facility maintenance, attention to detail, and a dedication to creating a secure and welcoming environment for all. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting regular inspections and routine maintenance of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems to ensure optimal operation.
  • Maintaining and repairing equipment and machinery to meet safety and performance standards.
  • Responding promptly to emergency repair needs, including replacing lighting fixtures, switches, bulbs, outlets, and performing minor repairs on shower heads, toilets, sinks, drywall, and flooring.
  • Utilizing expertise in reading building structural prints/plans and understanding the function and maintenance of building machinery such as boilers, chillers, water pumps, and generators.
  • Maintaining air units (HRU and MAU), including filter and belt changes, and managing air conditioning units, adjusting temperatures and thermostats as needed.
  • Performing safety inspections and maintenance of fire extinguishers, exit signs, and emergency lighting; adhere to safety and risk management procedures.
  • Executing building safety protocols for emergencies (fire, power outage, gas leaks, flooding, etc.) in accordance with the PYB emergency action plan standards.
  • Informing management of potential issues or foreseeable problems with facility operations.
  • Maintaining current stock of maintenance supplies and managing cost-effective purchasing.
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support facility maintenance and operational excellence.

III. Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions

  • High school diploma, technical high school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in building maintenance.
  • Knowledgeable in various trades, including electrical low voltage systems, carpentry, plumbing, and HVAC.
  • Proficient in the use of various equipment repair tools and knowledgeable in ladder safety.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a strong intuition.
  • Deep commitment to the safety and security of children.
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple, often competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Exhibits excellent judgment, capable of solving problems and making decisions with guidance from a supervisor.
  • Ability to anticipate future changes or identify areas of concern and take effective action.
  • Previous experience in a child/family-oriented environment is preferred.

IV. Compensation and Perks 

This position will have a salary range of $60,000 - $65,000 per year commensurate with experience.
