Description / Position Overview
Museum and Exhibits Maintenance Technician (Maintenance Technician II)
This position provides various building maintenance and exhibit preparation duties for the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM), which is housed in the 1903 El Paso County Courthouse.
The position ensures that this building and a nearby collections storage facility are maintained to serve visitors and/or preserve the collections. Successful candidates will have a general awareness of historic preservation and a desire to help the museum fulfill its mission. The position is responsible for tracking and completing building maintenance projects; repairing minor plumbing, electrical, and HVAC issues; scheduling the City's facilities maintenance and/or requesting bids from outside contractors to complete more intricate projects.

The position oversees contract janitorial staff and may conduct custodial activities between contract cleanings. The position will work under the direction of exhibit and curatorial staff to build exhibit cases, create artifact mounts, assist with other exhibit activities, and occasionally handle artifacts. The position ensures that the building is prepared for programs and events by setting up tables, chairs, screens, and projectors. S/He will maintain inventories of janitorial supplies, light bulbs, and other necessities.

Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Perform the full range of maintenance duties involved in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, masonry, and other duties as assigned.
  • Complete assigned work orders and tasks requiring maintenance skills and techniques following City policies and procedures, public safety standards and aesthetic guidelines related to maintenance work. This includes an awareness of historic preservation standards and artifact care and handling.
  • Operate various hand and power tools and shop equipment; operate equipment as assigned, including forklift.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required; monitor and maintain supply inventory.
  • Perform building inspections; assess necessary repair and maintenance work; perform safety and vandalism checks; remove trash and debris.
  • Maintain operation records; file reports as needed.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; explain City policies and procedures to the public.
  • May be required to remain on-call for emergency/disaster situations.
  • May lead the work of lower-level coworkers, contract staff, temporary, and seasonal personnel; ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures and workplace safety; review completed work for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specification.
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • Services and activities of assigned maintenance area.
  • Maintenance methods and techniques related to the area of assignment.
  • Equipment, materials, chemicals, and supplies used in assigned maintenance program.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability to:
  • Work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Safely and effectively operate tools, motorized equipment, and vehicles
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner
  • Provide information within area of assignment
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing Establish and maintain effective working relationships
Successful candidates will have

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • Three years of full-time experience in grounds maintenance including commercial irrigation maintenance
  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Ideal candidates will also have

  • Specialized training related to facility maintenance, especially in a museum, library, or similar cultural facility
  • Experience and/or training related to historic preservation and the maintenance of historic structures
  • Experience in facility maintenance, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC, and related skills
  • Experience scheduling and overseeing the work of contractors

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
Physical Demands: The ability to bend, twist, and stoop; lift and carry 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently; use fingers, both hands, and both legs; distinguish colors; and safely operate assigned vehicles and equipment is also required.
