Assistant Director Job Description

Position: Assistant Director II (Victim Advocate)

Starting Salary: $24.04/hr.

Work Hours: 40 hours a week (Monday - Friday 8am to 5 pm)

Job Type: Full-time

GENERAL PURPOSE

Petersburg Victim/Witness is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time, grant funded position of Victim Witness Program Assistant Director to perform intermediate paraprofessional and administrative work assisting victims and witnesses involved in cases handled by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The work is performed under the sponsorship of the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Performs crisis intervention, advocacy, and case management duties for victims and witnesses of crime.
  • Provides criminal justice process and victim rights information.
  • Sends correspondence to victims at various stages of the criminal justice process.
  • Assists victims with filing claims with the Virginia Victims Fund.
  • Provides court advocacy to crime victims, assesses needs, makes referrals to other human service agencies, and develops safety plans.
  • Maintains a variety of records and files pertaining to assigned cases and prepares reports.
  • This position requires the ability to exercise independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in ensuring the proper services are delivered to clients and the public.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality of information is paramount. The ability to interact with others in a high-stress environment is also required.
  • Works closely with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, Petersburg Sheriff’s Department, Petersburg Bureau of Police, Court personnel, State agencies, and other human service delivery organizations.
  • In the absence of the Program Director, this position will perform their duties.
  • Ability to quickly learn and become proficient with our CIMS program, VineLink, court website, and Case Management
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor under stressful circumstances

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to work cooperatively with others and interact in a professional, pleasant, and non‐abrasive manner.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position prefers an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in social work, criminal justice, or a related human services field. Or any equivalent combination of training and experience. The successful candidate should have proficiency in conversational Spanish, while not required, would be considered a plus.

Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking. Interpersonal communication is essential to the successful completion of job duties. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving.
