Position Overview

The On-Call Back-Up Registered Nurse plays a critical role in supporting two residential group homes and other healthcare programs. This nurse acts as a back up for the Primary Registered Nurse and provides medical support when the Primary Nurse is unavailable, including in-person and virtual support. The Back-Up Nurse is responsible for various tasks that ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, maintain proper medication management, and support overall patient care.
  • Medical Support & Coverage: On-call 24/7 for all medical-related reports, questions, etc., when the Primary Nurse is unavailable. The Back-Up Nurse must be ready to respond to emergency situations and provide in-person or virtual support as needed.
  • Documentation Review: Regularly review all documentation created by the Primary Nurse, including monthly narrative notes, Plans of Nursing (PONs), self-medicating assessments, and other medical records to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Medication Management: Oversee medication administration by staff, medication documentation, and prescriptions. This includes ensuring compliance with storage requirements, conducting monthly reviews of medication supplies, and initialing all Medication Administration Records (MARs).
  • Incident Management: Review and discuss medication errors and incidents with management and staff to identify the cause and ensure corrective actions are taken.
  • Coordination with Stakeholders: Communicate and coordinate with doctors, people supported, family members, and advocates as needed to ensure proper patient care and compliance with medical guidelines.
  • Training & Support: Facilitate Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP) training, including 1:1 sessions during staffing crises. Provide nursing support to people in all programs as needed.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Maintain knowledge of Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) service regulations to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Additional Assignments: Complete other tasks and assignments as deemed necessary by the supervisor or as required by the organization.

  • Collaboration: Provide support and tools for safe and meaningful community experiences. Utilize strategies to understand behavior and recommend effective programs.

Qualifications


  • Experience: Minimum of 1-year experience working with people with developmental disabilities.
  • Educational Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in nursing, required. Registered Nurse NYS licensure, required.
  • Schedule: This position is part-time, guarantee of 5 hours per month & the opportunity for remote work in our EHR system.
