SHIFT: Night

POSITION SUMMARY

The Emergency Nurse incorporates triage and prioritization, stabilization, resuscitation, crisis intervention, and /or emergency preparedness. Providing care to health care consumers that ranges from non-urgent to life threatening and includes but is not limited to medical illness, trauma care, pediatric care, gerontological care, injury prevention, women's health, mental health issues, and life and limb-saving measures. The nurse will utilize assessment, analysis, diagnosis, planning, and implementation, of interventions, outcomes identification, and evaluation of human responses when caring for health care consumers.

Requirements

  • Accurately and thoroughly completes triage assessments. Includes input from patient/family in initial assessment and in determining priority problems. Always makes certain that patient’s assessment (within assignment) is completed within the time frame. If at charge nurse level, ensures all duties are completed within time frame and within role duties.
  • Determines and initiates appropriate plan of care, orders in a timely manner
  • Provides direct patient care within the interpreted guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act of Missouri. Participates in clarifying medical information to patient, family and staff. Interprets, transcribes, and implements physician orders accurately. Adheres to medical center policies and procedures during medication administration (effect/reaction), order transcription, IV therapy and all other therapeutic modalities. Provides intense emotional and psychological support for patients/family. Participates in health care teaching of patients/family utilizing appropriate teaching standard, evaluating its effectiveness. Can perform all technical skills and procedures for area with little direction.
  • Communicates and updates families, patients in treatment area and waiting room, and actively participates in patient satisfaction and call back procedures
  • Completes patient care documentation and incomplete tasks before end of shift.

When acting as an ED Charge Nurse the following are essential functions:

Check and record on 7A shift:

  • Temperature and humidity where sterile reprocessed supplies are stored-(if adjustment needs to be made by maintenance can be done on 7A easier than on 7P)
  • All culture (blood, wound, urine, etc.) result review/documentation of action and intervention
  • Discharged patient callbacks-may be dispersed among ED nurses on shift, documentation of follow up in EMR/any needed administrative follow up on facility reporting form

To be done at each change of shift:

  • Narcotic count in Omnicell

To be done on each 7P shift:

  • Glucometer QC checks (unless facility is moving away from daily checks due to cost)
  • Check temperature of blanket warmer
  • Check temperature of patient food refrigerator

To be done by both 7A and 7P shift

  • Ensuring documentation logs are current during shift (restraints, sedation, EMS inbound calls)
  • Check crash cart defibrillator and pediatric crash cart lock and record (would like to move away from badge opening crash cart and begin labeling each drawer with earliest expiring item on a monthly basis-which would be done by 7P charge)

Make necessary updates and entries regarding the STARS Program

Participation and presenting information for ED in services as scheduled

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Associate's Degree required;Bachelor's Degree preferred;prior ER RN experience preferred; Current BLS certification, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC is required.
  • All ED nurses must complete 8 CEU’s related to stroke every two years. Nurses will be required to maintain and complete assigned CEU’s to meet Time Critical Diagnosis requirements to work in the ED.
