Description

Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. is seeking a highly capable transportation specialist to join our team. Perma-Fix is a recognized leader in processing and treating hazardous and radioactive waste for both government and commercial customers. The Transportation Specialist should have hands-on experience completing hazardous material shipments (including waste shipments) in full compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. This position will require extensive travel to various projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Transportation Specialist develops waste transportation documentation for hazardous material shipments in accordance with DOT regulations. We are looking for individuals who can perform the following functions:

• Identify appropriate packaging for the waste type and physical form.

• Authorize reuse of containers per 49 CFR, Transportation.

• Develop a transportation and route plan.

• Provide waste container certification.

• Obtain back-up information for each container on the shipment load list to reference during shipment preparation.

• Determine the DOT Basic Description.

• Prepare the shipping papers (Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest [UHWM], Low-Level Waste Manifest [LLWM], or Bill of Lading [BOL]) using industry-standard software. 

• Determine the marking and labeling for waste packages.

• Provide shipping notification to Radiation Protection, destination facilities and others.

• Obtain peer-review of the shipping papers (all shipments).

• Coordinate container inspection and loading.

• Perform the final walkdown and complete required inspection sheets with the driver.

• Ensure carrier compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Requirements (FMCSR).

• Apply placards and/or markings to the truck as needed.

• Maintain all shipping documentation as quality records.

• Participate and pass transportation qualifications

Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience shipping hazardous materials. 

• Advanced training in DOT requirements covering air, highway and rail shipments of hazardous materials. 

• Experience shipping radioactive materials (Class 7) and waste. 

• Proficiency in transportation management software. 

• Effective communication and collaborative skills. 

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
