Overview
The Registered Nurse will provide nursing care to offenders (routine, chronic and emergency care), maintaining continuity of care from admission to discharge.
Duties and Responsibilities
Standard of care is achieved through a multitude of services to include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments on an as-needed basis.
Possess the ability to delegate tasks and workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
Capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
To provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
Safe medication administration following DOC policy.
Provide employee health services in accordance with policy.
ACA standards of care, Health Services guidelines and policies, Operational policies and procedures are followed.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing program.
Virginia State License, or eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing based on the emergency provision issued in 2020.
Certified in Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers with current certification from an approved source.
Possesses a working knowledge of evidence-based principles and practices of professional nursing and skills to perform assessment.
Demonstrated ability to make competent decisions, perform physical examinations, develop care plans, document provided services and carry out prescribed orders.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in accordance with dialogic practices.
Demonstrates the ability to perform complete assignments, implement nursing guidelines, utilize established nursing evaluation tools, and evaluate institutional patients within the Department of Corrections.
Knowledge of medication use, actions and side effects.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
Prefer previous experience working with mental health patients.
Prefer experience in acute care and/or community health settings (at least one year).
