The Port General Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of physical tasks and manual labor to support the operations and maintenance of a port facility. This role involves assisting with the loading and unloading of cargo, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the port area, and contributing to the overall efficiency and safety of port operations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Cargo Handling:

   • Assist in loading and unloading cargo from ships, trucks, and other transport vehicles.
   • Use appropriate equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks to move and transport cargo.
   • Follow proper handling procedures to prevent damage to goods and ensure safety.

2. Port Maintenance:

   • Perform routine maintenance tasks to keep the port area clean, organized, and safe.
   • Sweep, mop, and remove debris from work areas, docks, and storage areas.
   • Repair and maintain equipment and facilities as needed.

3. Safety Compliance:

   • Adhere to all safety protocols, guidelines, and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.
   • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure its proper use.
   • Report any unsafe conditions or incidents to supervisors immediately.

4. Assisting Dock Workers:

   • Collaborate with dockworkers, crane operators, and other port personnel to ensure smooth cargo operations.
   • Assist in securing cargo for transport, using straps, chains, and other securing methods.

5. Inventory Management:

   • Help with inventory tracking and documentation, including recording incoming and outgoing cargo.
   • Assist in verifying cargo against manifests to ensure accuracy.

6. Equipment Operation:

   • Operate machinery and equipment under the guidance of trained operators.
   • Learn to operate basic equipment such as forklifts, hand tools, and other machinery as required.

7. Emergency Response:

   • Be familiar with emergency procedures and protocols.
   • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, assisting in evacuation or containment if necessary.

8. Communication:

   • Maintain effective communication with supervisors, fellow laborers, and other port staff.
   • Report any issues, delays, or concerns to appropriate personnel.
