Geotechnical Engineering Manager

Geotechnical engineers work alongside owners, designers, and contractors to assess a project site’s existing soil, rock, and groundwater conditions and provide professional guidance for the proposed infrastructure considering the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Advance company as technical experts in the field of geotechnical engineering while ensuring state of the practice is maintained.
  • Oversee Geotechnical staff to ensure staff are engaged, deliverable schedules are met, and overall company goals are achieved.
  • Review geotechnical reports and proposals along with project plans and specs for final deliverable.
  • Mentor staff on internal procedures as needed.
Would you like to:
  • Manage projects from proposal to final deliverables, including tracking progress and budget.
  • Oversee proposal development, including scope and fee development.
  • Travel throughout AK for fieldwork with sites ranging from the Aleutians to the Y-K Delta, Interior, and Southeast. Travel to other US states is possible, depending on company development and project needs. Less than 10 percent of time spent traveling.
  • Plan and oversee geotechnical investigations.
  • Review and coordinate soil laboratory testing for index testing like water content and grain size distribution and secondary testing like consolidation and triaxial.
  • Perform and review geotechnical analyses for foundations, retaining structures, slope stability, embankment stability, pavements, and temporary excavations, including dewatering and shoring, frozen and unfrozen ground, geosynthetics, and earthquake engineering.
  • Aid in the development of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for site development, utilities, roads, sanitation, and vertical construction projects.
  • Construction management – site visits, RFIs, re-designs as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Ideally you have:
  • Interest in learning beyond the academic setting and a passion for expanding your knowledge.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Experience with gINT and geotechnical software such as LPile, P-Y wall, PileBuck, GRLWEAP, SLIDE2, Temp/W, BERG2, and SETTLE3.
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Civil3D and Esri software, preferred but not required.
  • Experience or interest in working in rural Alaska.
  • Working well in a team environment with our multi-discipline engineering staff at various experience levels.
  • Ability to market the firm and staff capabilities to expand client base and enhance relationships with current clients.
  • Resourceful, innovative, and motivated to help clients meet project objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage personnel within a dynamic environment to ensure staff stay engaged and expand their technical skills and interests.
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in civil, geotechnical, or geological engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license in Alaska or licensed in another state with the ability to obtain Alaska PE license within 6 months. Additional licenses such as Geotechnical Engineer (GE) or Diplomate of Geotechnical Engineering (D.GE) preferred.
  • Experience level: 10 years or more with demonstrated experience with challenging soils, writing geotechnical reports, and mentoring junior staff.
