Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS:
  • Must maintain a valid New York State license and registration
Currently a permanent Registered Nurse 2 (Community).
OR
Eligible to transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law by having one year of permanent service in an approved title for transfer.
OR
Open to Public: Licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State AND Two years of post-licensure clinical nursing experience. One year of this experience must have been providing direct services to individuals diagnosed with mental illness, developmental disabilities, addiction, or substance use disorders in a community setting.
Substitution: a bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute for one year of general post licensure clinical nursing experience; and a master’s degree in nursing may substitute for two years of general post-licensure clinical nursing experience.
Duties Description
*$101,720- $111,381 Annually*
  • Posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for Registered Nurse 2 Community, Grade 20 ($72,032) and Increased Hiring Salary ($9,688) and Geographic Differential ($20,000). Geographic Differential added to the job rate ($91,381) for RN 2 Community, Grade 20.
  • A total of 5 hours deviation from the default schedule (Hours before or after the regular workday). 4 hours a month are expected to be on a weekend day and would count toward the above deviation expectation.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Candidate would function as Registered Nurse 2 with duties as described below and work with Registered Nurse Supervisor 1. Registered Nurse 2 will primarily assist with duties as described below with additional duties to be assigned as necessary by the Registered Nurse Supervisor 1 within the coverage region. The candidate must be highly organized, professional, and able to be self-directed. Candidate must have good interpersonal skills, consistent communication with supervisor and be able to collaborate well with other RN’s and disciplines.
Duties will include:
  • Provide clinical direction to Residential Nurses.
  • Provides routine training to RN’s, LPN’s, and direct support staff in areas of medication administration, medical policies, and any other nursing or medical issues.
  • Assist with case load coverage as needed (within coverage region).
  • Assist with new hire process including orientation and training.
  • Assist with LPN pool oversight in conjunction with Nurse Supervisor I.
  • Performing a broad range of clinical oversight and supports in management of emerging and existing medical/nursing issues.
  • Assisting in ensuring compliance with rules/regulations governing nursing practice in OPWDD.
  • Assist and ensuring implementation of facility policies and procedures related to nursing.
  • Assisting coordinating with hospitals and long-term support for end-of-life issues and/or plan safe discharges back to medically complex houses.
  • Participating in various meetings and serving on committees as needed.
  • Function as backup to the Nurse Supervisor I in his/her absence.
  • Reviewing individuals’ records for compliance with agency practice/protocol and developing a plan for correcting any deficits found.
  • Aid with EHR implementation, medical chart audits and site audits as assigned by the Nurse Supervisor.
  • Attends/completes on-line mandated DDSO training, as well as discipline specific training.
  • Ensures assigned training is completed by Residential RNs.
  • Supervise individuals’ overall health care needs and work with nurses to implement optimal care.
  • Work with nurses to coordinate appointments for primary, consultant services and required tests as needed.
  • Assist nurses to ensure medications and treatments are administered according to approved policies and regulations.
  • Provide nursing components to the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Incident Investigation and other duties as assigned by Nurse Supervisor I and/or Director of Nursing.
The Candidate must be able to perform CPR compressions on a supine individual on the floor. The Nurse demonstration of CPR compressions on the floor would ensure nurse ability to perform in worst case scenario, since we use no backboards in OPWDD.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
  • NY HELPS - This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). HELPS Program titles may be filled via a non-competitive appointment. This means that you do not need to take an exam to qualify, but you do need to meet the minimum qualifications of the title.
If you are hired under the HELPS Program, you will be first be appointed as a temporary employee. In May 2024, if you are performing successfully in the position, your appointment will be changed from temporary to permanent non-competitive. Once you are in permanent status, your official probationary period will begin, and you may take any promotion exam for which you are qualified.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS are expected to have their permanent non-competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. You will not have to take an exam to gain permanent competitive status.
  • Family and household member relationships: OPWDD policy may impact eligibility for this position.   • CAPA: Must be cleared by the NYS Central Register for Child Abuse and Maltreatment if position requires working with minors and not previously cleared.
