People USA is Hiring a Strategy & Development Intern Near Poughkeepsie, NY

People USA is a peer-run mental health non-profit that provides innovative crisis response and wellness services. Being peer-run means that all our services are developed and operated by people who have personally overcome mental health issues, addiction, or trauma. This makes us a valuable addition and alternative to the traditional behavioral health care system.
People USA’s unique, peer-led models are proven to significantly reduce incarceration rates and have been replicated all over the US and Europe. Our mission is to educate, support, and empower people and communities to understand, manage, and overcome mental health, addiction, and social determinant of health challenges like homelessness. 
People’s USA Strategy & Development interns will have the exciting opportunity to make a difference in the lives of local community members struggling with mental health, addiction, and homelessness by supporting the Creative Development team with a variety of tasks. The Development team is the creative wing of the nonprofit, responsible for the rapid growth of the organization via marketing & social media, PR, fundraising, project management, and government affairs. (Interns will never be bored!) Based on our candidate base, we will consider hiring between 1-3 interns to support these initiatives. Please indicate which of the subjects below you feel you are best suited to and why (can be multiple). Intern credit will be provided. Interns must have their own computer and reliable transportation. This is an unpaid internship with People USA. Interns can create a flexible schedule.
Interns will have the opportunity to attend weekly Development team meetings alongside our Chief Strategy & Development Officer, Development Manager, Project Manager, Marketing Manager, & Development & Communications Coordinator.
 
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 
Marketing & Social Media 
  • Collecting and analyzing social media and website data to identify marketing improvements and areas of opportunity 
  • Contribute to marketing campaigns to further marketing efforts 
  • Complete projects related to branding, content creation, social media marketing and email marketing 
Fundraising 
  • Conducting research on potential donors (individuals, corporations, foundations) 
  • Assisting with stewardship of donors by creating tax receipts & writing thank you notes 
  • Collecting in-kind donations from local vendors to be used in our event raffles 
  • Helping spread the word about fundraising events by distributing marketing materials locally 
  • Assisting with the planning of our Annual Breakfast, a theatrical outreach and fundraising event held in October 
Project Management 
  • Assisting with updating project plans, project templates, stakeholder registry, contracts, timelines and other documents with key information
  • Attending meetings with key stakeholders, taking notes and compiling meeting summaries
PR 
  • Assist with building relationships with current or prospect clients 
  • Drafting media pitches 
  • Analyzing client competitors and industry trends/current news 
Government Affairs 
  • Facilitating and attending meetings between management and elected officials 
  • Monitoring legislative activities at the local, state, and federal level 
  • Conducting research on mental health data, substance use, and housing data in preparation for advocacy meetings
  • Gathering data on legislative priorities, legislative responses, and individual legislators 
  • Creating educational content for staff related to mental health, substance use, and housing. 
  • Conducting outreach to staff to prepare briefing documents and other materials 
  • Preparing reports and proposals for internal and external use 
 Qualifications: 
  • Excellent written communication skills 
  • Highly organized with attention to detail 
  • Experience with social media marketing 
  • An interest in working with nonprofits 
  • Adaptable and flexible to meet constantly changing needs of the team 
Nice to have: 
  • Personal experience with issues related to mental health, addiction, or trauma
  • Majoring/minoring in or experience with political science, marketing/communications, human services, public relations, project management, nonprofit management, or similar field 
  • Experience using Monday.com 
  • Event planning experience 
  • Work experience, or experience as an intern 
  • Junior or Senior year 
  • An interest in interning for more than one semester 
  • Reliable Transportation
