Summary:

  • Under the direct supervision of the pharmacist, the Outpatient Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the technical operations of the outpatient pharmacy including processing outpatient prescriptions for adjudication to third party insurance plans, accurately filling prescriptions in a timely manner, maintaining medication inventory, unpacking the daily wholesale order, removing expired medications, and assisting patients at the pharmacy counter.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares medications for dispensing under the supervision of the pharmacist, demonstrating accuracy, precision, and consistency relating to selection, packaging, and labeling functions.
  • Accurately enters prescriptions, patient health information and insurance information into the clinical pharmacy information system for pharmacist review.
  • Communicates with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
  • Supports the Meds to Go hospital discharge program and communicates effectively and professionally with multiple hospital disciplines.
  • Completes monthly controlled substance inventory with pharmacist.
  • Runs cash register accurately and dispenses prescriptions to patients.
  • Provides customer service at the counter or via telephone, as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining proper inventory and control of drugs and supplies purchased by the Pharmacy. Regularly rotates medication inventory and checks for expired medications.
  • Restocks all areas of the outpatient pharmacy as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity and health system organization.

Credentials:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • 6 months of Pharmacy experience in a retail/outpatient pharmacy (Preferred)
