Peak Design is Hiring a Senior Copywriter Near San Francisco, CA

ABOUT US

Peak Design makes radical, meticulously-engineered gear for detail-obsessed people. Our backpacks, travel bags, camera gear, and phone accessories are used dang-near everywhere. If you’ve visited Machu Picchu, Tokyo, or an REI store in the last 10 years, you’ve been within ogling distance of a Peak Design product.

Alongside our award-winning gear is a brand that truly reflects who we are as people—passionate about design, deeply caring about our environmental and social impact, unafraid to speak up, radically transparent, and generally down to clown. Whether we’re explaining a product, running a sale, launching a nonprofit, sponsoring a film, or razzing the biggest company on Earth, we do it with our trademark honesty, warmth, and wit. Through our products and our brand, we aim to create delight, and leave this world better than how we found it.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Ready to use your expertise, razor sharp wit and persuasive writing skills? Here at Peak Design, you can.

As a copywriter at Peak Design, you’ll write short-and-long-form copy for various mediums. Your work will help open wallets, change minds and sometimes, just make someone’s day a little brighter. From irreverent emails that make customers click “buy” to video scripts and clips our customers can’t stop sharing, no two days (or projects) will look the same.

You’ll spend about 60-70% of your time writing - the bulk of which will be emails, texts, and video scripts, sprinkled with a wide range of other projects—messaging briefs, ads, website copy, help articles, packaging, and social posts to name a few. The remainder of your time will be spent in meetings and brainstorming sessions with teams who are directly influenced by your work (external agency partners, internal stakeholders, etc.) and our weekly company all-hands.

Internally, you’ll collaborate most frequently with project managers, marketing, brand and video teams, though you’ll occasionally be brought into discussions with product design, customer service, retail, and wholesale. The more connected you are to all parts of the company, the better you’ll be at your job.

Successful copywriters are creative, collaborative, organized and able to clearly understand and communicate a range of concepts. You’ll be challenged to quickly become a product and customer expert, and we’ll rely on you to write lengthy articles about things like how our vibration isolator works, or carefully word a Kickstarter update explaining why our fulfillment was delayed…again. In other words, your work spirit animal should be a little sponge, able to quickly soak up a ton of knowledge and history to do your job at full throttle.

We’ll admit we have a difficult voice to emulate. This role requires somebody special (you?) with both a certain sense of humor and the innate ability to know when to dial it up or down depending on the audience or context. The kids call it having the “it” factor. Having “it” is a big requirement and makes hiring for this role more difficult, but it’s of utmost importance to us and our brand.

Aside from all that, you’ll succeed in this role if you’re data-driven and use tools like archetypes, customer research and campaign data to inform your writing. If you rely heavily on AI and chatGPT, please continue your search. We’re in need of someone who has the ability to connect with our customers on a human level and transcend the endless noise of marketing chatter they are subjected to constantly. And robots just aren’t there yet. You could say they lack the “it” factor.

Role Requirements

  • 5 years of professional experience in a copywriting role, either agency or client-side.
  • A portfolio that proves you can write anything from snappy headlines to compelling calls-to-action and demonstrates a wide range of writing capabilities, including emails, landing pages and video scripts.
  • A knack for storytelling that can turn even the driest topic into a page-turner.
  • Ability to emulate the Peak Design voice and infuse it throughout all your writing.
  • A sense of humor that can find its way into your writing and cut through the noise and BS that’s so prevalent in much of today’s marketing.
  • Top notch communicator with approachable, grammatically correct writing style.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail (e.g., if you found an error in this job description, it is still bugging you).
  • Experience with project management and communication tools like Notion, Asana, Slack, Google Suite, etc.
  • The ability to play nice with others, including designers, strategists, and occasionally, office pets.
Nice-to-haves
  • 2 years of e-commerce experience, either agency or client-side.
  • Experience with email/SMS platforms like Klaviyo.
  • Experience writing instructional or support articles
  • Graphic design and layout chops and experience with tools like Figma, Adobe suite or similar. Can you write and design a top-notch email? Tell us more.
  • Experience with SEO and how to make keywords flow naturally.
  • A secret (or not-so-secret) love for analytics, because numbers can tell stories too.
  • An interest in emerging digital platforms where new kinds of storytelling are possible.
A Day in the Life of A Copywriter
  • Start your morning with a cup o’ joe and fire up the ol’ laptop to check Slack, email and get acquainted with your to-do list for the day. If you’re in the office, hit up the kitchen where any number of fresh baked goods or treats wait to tickle your tastebuds.
  • Spend your mid-morning knocking out the copy for a 4-part email series, being sure to account for some personalized elements that will be included.
  • At noon, join a brainstorming session where the team pitches ideas for a new Kickstarter video. Your creative ideas and witty taglines steal the show and earn some laughs (and we don’t mean of the courtesy kind).
  • If it’s Tuesday, don’t forget to put in your lunch order. It’s on us!
  • After a block walk to knock out the post-lunch sleepies, you’re back at your desk reviewing a customer archetype to “put yourself in their shoes” before you begin on a video script for an upcoming product release.
  • One more call, this time with our digital advertising and media team, to chat through a few new campaign concepts and add any thoughts or ideas to the pile.
  • Log off for the day and enjoy some time away from the screen. Perhaps that’s a post-work team bike ride or impromptu team pickleball game, or spending quality time with friends and family.

WHY US?

Thanks to the folks at Outside Magazine, we can tell you that Peak Design is an objectively great place to work. Why? We provide opportunities to go deep in your craft, work both autonomously and collaboratively, drive your professional growth, and recharge with flexible Fridays and unlimited paid time off -- the saucy list of perks and benefits goes on. So, how do we maintain this exquisite way of working while also pulling off an exceptionally thoughtful brand and product line? A close-knit culture that values transparency, community, trust, and questioning the status quo.

Many employees find the way we run our business to be radically different from what they’ve experienced elsewhere. You might call it the opposite of micromanagement: employees are often expected to set their own priorities and roadmaps for their areas of the business. Who thrives here? Self-starters. Question-askers. People who make their own to-do lists. Folks who can do a little bit of everything. People who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty with nitty-gritty details in order to see a vision through.

If you prefer to work in a more traditional corporate environment, Peak Design might not be the place for you. But if you’re pickin’ up what we’re putting down, we look forward to hearing from you!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION & BELONGING

At Peak Design we believe a diverse team is an innovative team and something worth celebrating. A range of perspectives and backgrounds creates a stronger and more creative work environment (not to mention more fun). We’re committed to equality and inclusivity across race, gender, age, religion, identity, and experience.

Some candidates may see a long list of job requirements and feel discouraged because they don’t match every single bullet point – we strongly encourage you to apply anyway! If what we do resonates with you, and you feel excited and able to contribute, we’re equally stoked for the opportunity to engage with you.

ACCOMODATIONS

Peak Design provides reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities in the job application and interview process (including if you have any difficulty using our online system). If you need such an accommodation, please complete the application form below.
