The kind of person we're looking for:

An experienced Scala/Java software engineer with a handle on good software design, a knack for solving difficult problems in complex multi-component distributed systems, and an interest in learning new things. Someone who can understand the importance of correct and performant APIs in a complex software stack, and who can build services to implement them and frameworks to test them. Must design and build with scale, responsiveness, and fast performance in mind.

The kind of stuff you'll be doing:

• Our SaaS platform handles billions of transactions and other messages and integrates with numerous tech partners. You will be helping us to bring more features and innovation to the platform
• Leverage modern technologies and frameworks in a standard multi-tier service-oriented distributed system
• Must be able, on a rotational basis, to work outside normal business hours (i.e. early mornings, evenings and weekends) to support critical systems and perform deployments
• Working mostly with server-side backend (Java/Scala) code (3 tier architecture) with the occasional foray into SQL and Mongo code 
• Designing and developing new features for our Back End Services and Components in a service-oriented system 
• Collaborate with Front End developers, other Back End developers and database specialists to accomplish your development mission 
• Contribute to improve our software engineering standards and processes in order to incorporate best practices and bring excellence to the team execution and software development/deployment pipeline 
• Working side-by-side with the Product team to best understand the needs of our customers and transform ideas into software 
• Collaborating with our customer support and integrations teams on troubleshooting issues in configured programs, typically by spending time to understand the customer's use cases and the reading the existing code base to determine whether there there may be bugs or configuration issues. 
• Working collaboratively with all teams in Engineering and Operations to maximize system stability and uptime, and help design/develop innovative solutions to solve challenges that come with a rapidly growing SaaS platform 

The kind of experience you'll need:

• 5 to 10 years software development experience writing Java OR Scala
• Experience building REST APIs and web services
• Understanding of backend distributed systems and components
• Experience developing, testing, maintaining server side software components
• Understanding of and experience with web technologies: HTTP(S), REST or gRPC, JSON, XML
• Good knowledge of SQL and working with SQL databases like MS SQL Server
• Strong Git/Github knowledge
• Solid understanding of Object-oriented Programming (OOP) principles
• Experience articulating questions about requirements. creating complex design specifications, working with product/non engineering resources to articulate and commit to project deadlines

The extra stuff that would be nice:

• 1 years building software with Scala or other functional programming languages
• Experience using Industry standard build tools such as Maven, SBT, Gradle
• Understanding of SMTP and email deliverability concepts such as DKIM, SPF and DMARC
• Server-side experience using Apple Push Notification Service and Firebase Cloud Messaging
• Experience with data streaming libraries and frameworks such as Akka Streams
• Familiarity with standard microservice and hybrid microservice architectural concepts
• Experience with establishing and analyzing API metrics and KPIs
• Knowledge of DevOps principles for deployment, maintenance and monitoring
• Experience working with Unix and/or Linux shell environments
• Experience writing Unit Tests, especially with JUnit, Scalatest and Specs2
• Experience using Azure (e.g. Azure functions, Event hubs, SQL services, Cosmos DB, Blob storage, Key Vault)
• Experience working with advanced MS SQL Server features including SSIS packages and SolarWinds, ETL tools, etc.
• Experience working with NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, etc.
• Experience working with Apple Push Notification service (APNs) and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM)
