Job Description Summary: PayPal’s Legal Team is looking for an experienced and dynamic attorney to join its litigation team. In this role, you will work closely with fellow litigation team members and internal stakeholders to coordinate and manage all aspects of litigation. Job Description: Key Responsibilities: Be accountable for performing and managing litigation activities in North America on assigned matters through trial, including research, pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, conferences, trials, mediations, arbitrations, and appeals. Responsible for reporting to senior managers in the litigation and legal function – including the ability to communicate in writing and verbally in a clear and concise manner. Take a lead role in setting, recommending, and executing strategies that will ensure PayPal’s interests are represented in the best, most cost‐effective manner. Develop a strong rapport and working relationship with business counterparts across the enterprise to help drive the delivery of excellent legal services. Manage outside counsel retained to represent the company and drive alignment on case strategy, budget, and staffing. Advise internal stakeholders on trends in litigation, and changes in relevant statutes and regulations, for purposes of recommending strategies regarding pending litigation and to mitigate future litigation including providing regular reporting to leadership. Review and analyze various agreements (including customer contracts and complex merchant agreements), communications with PayPal customers, and website content for purposes of identifying and mitigating any potential litigation risk. Collaborate with other litigation team members, including paralegals, in their duties and help develop them in their roles and skills. Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements to assist the litigation team and others in the company to increase efficiency and maximize the use of available resources. Manage and leverage data to drive decisions on litigation management, to report on litigation and risks facing the company, and to develop litigation metrics Qualifications: This is an midlevel to experienced attorney role requiring a demonstrated proficiency and experience in all aspects of litigation management. Juris doctorate degree with an active license to practice law in at least one jurisdiction. Litigation experience at a law firm or in house legal department handling commercial and consumer litigation. Experience handling cases involving claims arising out of the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, Unfair Deceptive or Abusive Acts and Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and state and/or federal claims applicable to the financial services industry. The qualified candidate must possess the ability to quickly assess the legal exposure and provide concise legal advice to internal stakeholders. This is a fast-paced position that is suited to a self-starter who has the experience to quickly take ownership of a caseload of complex litigation matters. Customer focused business mindset. Ability to effectively influence, lead, collaborate with and encourage others at all levels with an inclusive and collaborative team culture. Good project manager who can bring various constituencies and stakeholders together to complete projects timely and efficiently. Demonstrated knowledge of effective management of litigation. Experience vetting and hiring outside counsel and expert witnesses. Experience coordinating and responding to discovery. Excellent research, writing and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal skills and a proactive mindset. Team player who is comfortable with a dynamic and changing environment that emphasizes collaboration. Ability to manage numerous projects and cases simultaneously under tight deadlines. Skilled oral and written communicator. Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances. Familiarity with, and strong interest in, PayPal, mobile payments, emerging payment technology and the payments industry. Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to keep and maintain clear, accurate, and concise records. Prior experience in the financial services industry is preferred. Some travel is required, often out of state.
