Job Description:

PAWS Atlanta is seeking a person with previous animal handling and caretaking experience for a part-time, Veterinary Assistant position. The ideal candidate has experience administering medications to dogs and cats, as well as some basic grooming skills, and previous experience working at an animal boarding facility or shelter. The candidate must work well autonomously and in a small team. They must be proactive when it comes to completing their assigned daily tasks including general shelter animal monitoring and facility care. In general, the candidate should also be flexible to change, detail-oriented, organized, and an effective communicator. The candidate also needs to be a quick learner who is willing to take on the daily excitement and challenge of working in a small, no-kill, shelter veterinary clinic.

Duties:

  • Daily care for sick animals in the veterinary clinic.
  • Administer daily medications to dogs and cats.
  • Perform weekly medicated baths on medical cases.
  • Perform daily medical walk-through exams in ALL areas of the shelter. Discuss any noted concerns with the shelter veterinarian and/or shelter manager.
  • Ensure ALL tasks have been completed on the daily, weekly, and monthly task lists.
  • Clean, stock, and organize the veterinary clinic, medical equipment and medical supplies.
  • Ensure weekly shelter food order is complete
  • Input medical data into PetPoint for all shelter animals.
  • Check company email and calendar daily
  • Ensure all outside laboratory specimens are properly collected, stored, and shipped in the appropriate time frame for all necessary testing.
  • Assist in all scheduled Public Vaccine Clinics
  • Willingness to learn and expand veterinary assistant skills to assist the veterinarian with patient exams, vaccine administration, and surgery.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of general animal care principles and practices.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods (8 hours a day) and to bend and reach to perform assigned work activities.
  • Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs. without assistance.
  • Ability to interact with sheltered dogs and cats including sick or injured animals as well as some aggressive animals.
  • Ability to understand and follow a variety of oral and written instructions/procedures.
  • Ability to learn the basic functions on our animal management software system
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn/perform a variety of animal care related work activities.
  • Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
