Transportation Advocacy Fellowship Project Background
In 2017, PYD implemented the Transportation Advocacy Mentoring Initiative (TAMI) in partnership with Easterseals, which leveraged the power of mentoring to increase the skills and knowledge around transportation planning and advocacy for 7-10 young adults with disabilities (mentees). The result of this project was a Transportation Advocacy Mentoring Initiative Implementation Guide, which was released at the 2018 convention of the American Association of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.The proposed project will build upon the TAMI project and leverage the perspectives of young adults with disabilities to inform mobility management professionals by developing a professional development guide.The goal of the fellowship is for young adults with disabilities to advance the understanding of engaging youth with disabilities in transportation coordination and mobility management. The fellowship will culminate in a short guide for mobility management professionals to help these professionals engage youth in community coordination.
 

Fellowship Position Description

The transportation advocacy fellow will research, write and edit a transportation advocacy guide and support the creation of an online transportation advocacy training module. The creation of the guide will occur in July & August of 2024 and the final project will be presented at a national webinar in the fall of 2024. The project will take approximately 5 hours/week over the course of the summer and fellows will receive a stipend of $1,500 for their work at the end of the fellowship. The final project will be embedded in LEARN, PYD’s learning management system, which is used by Mobility Management Connections and disseminated to a national audience.

    • Strong time management and project management skills
    • Strong research and writing skills
    • Background in transportation advocacy
    • Demonstrates accuracy, comprehensiveness, and attention to detail
    • Is a self-starter, able to work independently, and to identify work needed to be completed.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team; seeks and allows in support appropriately, including receiving feedback and information
    • Strong preference for lived experience as a person with a disability
