TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Park Manager and Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work and is responsible for the daily operations, maintenance, and repair associated with Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center. Performs all phases of maintenance, cleaning, and repairs to facilities, grounds, and equipment. Operates and maintains all types of equipment including hand and power tools, mowers, and tractors. Performs administrative and customer service duties including purchasing supplies, materials, preparing reports and providing visitor services. Assists with enforcement of park rules and regulations. Coordinates the work of hourly and volunteer workers. Serves as the Back-up Utility Plant Operator (UPO) and assists in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the water utility system. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from High School or GED.

Experience:

Three years facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance experience.

Licensure:

Must possess a valid class “C” state driver’s license.

Must possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment, a class "D" Water and class D Wastewater license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ);

Must possess or be able to obtain, within three years of employment, a class "C" Water and class C Wastewater license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses and compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s (TCEQ) Criminal Conviction Guidelines.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

Experience:

Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience with a maximum substitution of two years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Three years general maintenance experience in areas such as: repairing buildings, equipment, plumbing, or electrical systems OR grounds maintenance experience in areas such as: operating lawn mowers, tractors, trucks, power or hand tools;

Experience working with a water or wastewater systems;

Experience working with the public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of building and facility repair techniques such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or mechanical;

Knowledge of general maintenance techniques;

Knowledge of wastewater collection and water distribution systems;

Knowledge of basic mathematics;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in performing minor construction and repair projects to facilities to include plumbing, electrical, and carpentry;

Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment;

Skill in making minor repairs to small equipment and vehicles used in the daily operation of the park;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner

Ability to utilize computers to register park visitors and to complete departmental reports and forms;

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

Ability to effectively train, lead, and provide guidance to hourly personnel, park hosts and volunteers;

Ability to prepare required reports;

Ability to operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment systems in accordance with TCEQ rules, regulations and guidelines;

Ability to work as a member of a team;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work in public park with overnight camping and day use;

Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Required to respond to emergency and on call situations;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
