SummaryReporting to the Director of Director of Capital Planning, Preservation, and Institutional Relations, t he Part-Time Tour Guide is responsible for guiding visitors through the historic interiors of the landmarked Armory building and for providing informative and engaging commentary on the Armory’s social, architectural, and military history as well as contemporary artistic productions.
New Tour Guides will be trained to be knowledgeable about the building’s history, current restoration processes and conservation activities, and artistic programming.
Tours are irregularly scheduled a month in advance and may be on weekends or weekdays depending on the demand and upon the schedule of the Tour Guide. This position has a very flexible schedule and would work for students, artists, and people with other work commitments. Tours generally last 60-70 minutes.
ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function to a satisfactory professional standard. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
  • Call upon the history learned in training to provide visitors with information about the Armory that is accurate, clear, and concise.
  • Draw out and respond to the interests, perspectives, and questions of the visitors.
  • Inform visitors about the current artistic programming and encourage ticket sales and memberships.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants throughout the tour.
  • Keep up to date with new information and research about the Armory.
Qualifications
  • Ability to learn and memorize tour content, as well as the ability to tailor content as needed.
  • Knowledge of and/or strong interest in historic preservation, NYC & architectural history, and/or the arts.
  • Ability to speak in front of large groups of people.
  • Habits of consistent reliability and punctuality
  • Fluency in English and a second language is desired.
  • A welcoming, professional demeanor, collegial, and comfortable with flexibility.
  • Ability to be physically active for a minimum of two hours.
Education & Experience
  • An undergraduate degree in history, historic preservation, arts, architecture, preferred, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Students in relevant programs are welcome to apply.
  • Tour leading or arts education experience.
CompensationCompensation is $100 per tour. The tour schedule will be variable and set at least one month in advance. Some weeks there will be three tours, some weeks there will be no tours. This is a non-exempt position.
