Parents' Foundation for Transitional Living is Hiring a Recreation Specialist (Programming Specialist) Near New Haven, CT

Program Specialist in a Residential Program

Parents’ Foundation for Transitional Living, Inc., a private, nonprofit mental health residential program (non-treatment) for adults with serious and persistent mental illness is currently recruiting for a full-time Program Specialist.

The Program Specialist is a key member of our team who works with our residents to plan and implement activities that enrich their lives. Based on resident interests and needs, the Program Specialist initiates new groups, monitors existing groups, and works with Care Coordinators to ensure residents participate in programs that promote individual interests and goal achievement.

In addition, the Program Specialist:

  • Develops program, strives for improvement in all areas of programmatic operation and assists in insuring program compliance with any regulatory standards.
  • Drives residents to both group and one-on-one community outings. May drive residents to appointments.
  • Is responsible for the documentation of group attendance, activity participation, and progress on goals.
  • Works with other staff who facilitate groups.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has a Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in a human service related field or the arts and has a minimum of one year of experience in a mental health setting. Equivalent, unique experience will be considered.
  • Is knowledgable around mental illnesses (schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorder, for example) & therapeutic techniques (mindfulness, art therapy, music therapy, for example)
  • Has a minimum of one year facilitating group programs effectively
  • Is experienced teaching ADL skills
  • Is creative and willing to try new ways of helping people achieve their goals
  • Is patient, supportive, and helpful when working with residents, families, and peers
  • Practices empathy and respect for persons living with mental illness
  • Is able to work with some flexibility in scheduling when needed
  • Is a confident driver with a valid CT driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Has great organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
