Position:

SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOL COUNSELING

Effective Date:

July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025

Job Goal:

To provide leadership, supervision, coordination, and innovation to the school counseling program so that each student may derive maximum benefit from the program.

Employment Terms:

Twelve-month year; tenure-track position

Full-time; eligible for health insurance benefits

Position is associated with the terms and conditions of the Paramus Association of Principal and Supervisors (PASA) Agreement with the Paramus Board of Education

Reports To:

Director of Student Personnel Services

Qualifications:

1. Master’s Degree – Guidance/Student Personnel Services

2. New Jersey Certificate: Student Personnel Services

3. New Jersey Certificate: Supervisor or Principal

4. A minimum of five years of teaching/guidance experience

5. Knowledge of and/or experience with K-12 students

6. Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Job Responsibilities:

A.

1. Continuously collaborates with school counselors to develop, implement, and evaluate the Guidance and Counseling program.

2. Supervises and evaluates elementary, middle, and high school counselors and the student assistance counselor (SAC) in conjunction with building principals.

3. Supervises and evaluates the school counseling department support staff and assigns duties as appropriate among the support staff.

4. Establishes effective relationships with other supervisors to ensure the curricular, instructional, and counseling needs of students are met.

5. Oversees counseling personnel to effectively utilize individual skills and competencies.

6. Supervises the maintenance and updating of student records and reports to meet legal and state standards and guidelines.

7. Coordinates recruitment, screening, hiring, training, and assignment of counseling personnel as needed.

8. Oversees the development and delivery of in-service training programs for school counseling department personnel.

9. Develops and maintains a comprehensive school counseling program including developmental programs in the areas of education, career, and personal counseling as required by state law and system-wide goals:

a) Works with school counseling staff in conjunction with principals in the orientation of parents/guardians/caregivers and students to the schools.

b) Directs a system of subject selection which responds to the needs, expectations, and ambitions of students and parents/guardians/caregivers.

c) Develops and coordinates an orientation program for students and parents/ guardians/caregivers to facilitate movement from the elementary to middle school to the high school.

10. Develops an ongoing communication system with the community, including opportunities for counselor-parent/guardian/caregiver group meetings.

11. Maintains communication with institutions of higher learning, industry, and the military service.

12. Collaborates with the Director of Student Personnel Services, Supervisor of Special Services, and the Supervisor of Mental Health and Student Support Services on developing and overseeing the implementation of an integrated SPS program that reflects the support needs of the students.

13. Collaborates with building and district administrators on effective means of counseling service delivery at each level.

14. Schedules and facilitates school counseling department meetings to ensure all facets of the school counseling program are moving forward appropriately, to disseminate pertinent information, and to develop new programs while consistently updating existing programs.

15. Oversees and assists school counselors in interpreting and implementing district and building programs and services for parents/guardians/caregivers and relevant community members.

16. Supervises the programs and day-to-day operation of the Career Center.

17. Assists principals in the planning and implementation of all student and parent/guardian/caregiver orientation programs.

18. Assists principals with the development and implementation of the student scheduling process.

19. Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the development of the high school master course schedule.

20. Implements an ongoing program at the elementary, middle, and high schools which provides counseling for individuals and groups of students and parents/guardians/caregivers.

21. Assists in the organization and coordination of all major high school testing programs.

22. Keeps abreast of progress and new developments in the fields of Guidance and Counseling.

23. Works, under the direction of the Director of Student Personnel Services, with school counselors to develop appropriate 504 Plans and ensure staff knowledge of those plans.

24. Collaborates with principals and school counselors to ensure the development and implementation of the school guidance and counseling program.

25. Coordinates the choosing of candidates for leadership activities.

26. Ensures student interim reports and quarterly report cards are completed in a timely manner and made available to parents/guardians/caregivers.

27. Ensures all school counseling programs, including evening sessions, are planned and implemented in a timely manner.

28. Oversees the planning and implementation of programs delivered by school counselors in classrooms.

29. Coordinates the timely publication of the high school “Program of Studies” and school counseling district communications to ensure communication and collaboration with parents/guardians/caregivers and students.

30. Oversees the college application process.

1. Performs other appropriate responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
