Special Education Assistive Technology Technician

Location: James P Lee Early Childhood Learning Center

9 months, 8 hours/day

Grade 15, $16.16/hour

Purpose Statement

The job of Special Education Assistive Technology Technician is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for installing, repairing, and maintaining assistive technology equipment; identifying repair and/or replacement needs; providing information on the proper uses of equipment; and performing clerical functions related to the processing and distributing of devices.

This job reports to Program Specialist

Essential Functions

Coordinates with teachers, site administration, supervisor and other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.

Delivers requested assistive technologies for the purpose of ensuring arrival to specific location. Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information and/or taking appropriate action.

Installs assistive devices (e.g. Intellitools, software, hardware, etc.) for the purpose of providing assistive devices to support student learning.

Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. inventory records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and providing reliable resource information.

Maintains and/or repairs a variety of items (e.g. switches, battery interrupters, low tech devices, keyboards, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe working condition.

Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.

Performs circulation activities (e.g. item check-in and check-out, etc.) for the purpose of controlling the use, location and availability of items in the technology loan library.

Prepares materials for use in specific instructional programs for the purpose of completing activities and directing services in a timely manner.

Prepares written materials (e.g. repair status, activity logs, loan library paperwork, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.

Processes the transfer and disposal of equipment with property control for the purpose of conforming to District policies.

Researches a variety of topics (e.g. current practices, new technologies, resources, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or enhancing services.

Trains and/or supports staff for the purpose of ensuring their ability to use new and/or existing District assistive technologies.

Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions for the purpose of performing minor repairs, referring to repair services, or returning it to the vendor.

Warehouses assistive technologies (e.g. communicators, alternative keyboards, screen readers, etc.) for the purpose of establishing an inventory of items commonly used items.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment; handling hazardous materials; adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; installing computer application software.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communication and computer access systems, computer application programs; construction and repair of simple assistive technology equipment; assistive technologies; inventory practices.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; displaying mechanical aptitude; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, District personnel and parents.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.

Experience: Job related experience is required.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
