Job description

The Lab Tech I position is responsible for data entry, specimen processing/collection, test performance, and reporting test result

Essential Functions:

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.·
  • Organize work by matching test orders with specimen labeling; sort specimens; check labeling; log specimens; arrange reports for delivery; keep work surfaces clean and orderly.
  • Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verify equipment function; utilize approved testing procedures; and monitor quality control measures and protocols.
  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Maintain records, which demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities, instrument calibrations and instrument maintenance.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or test result reporting.
  • Apply corrective action and/or notify laboratory supervisor.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Serve as a technical resource by participating in staff training; answer questions of other professionals; participate in education opportunities; read professional publications; maintain personal networks; and participate in professional organizations.
  • Contribute to a safe and secure environment by following established standards and procedures; and comply with legal regulations.
  • Enhance laboratory services and company reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; and explore opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Education Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Required: High-school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: AS degree in science or health-related field
  • Education and training equivalent to an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology

Experience:

Required: 1 year of Laboratory & specimen collection experience; 1-3 years of applicable lab accessioning experience

Preferred: 3 years of Laboratory Experience

Additional qualifications:

  • Special Skills: Possess ability to work independently/autonomously and interdependently with other health care professionals. Have extensive patient assessment skills using diagnostic methods and instruments and passes ability to develop appropriate plan of care, modifying as indicated. Possess effective communication skills and interpersonal skills with patients, families and members of health care team.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing or scanning is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bed or stand on a stool as necessary. Additionally, some cleaning is required. This would require the ability to sweep, mop or vacuum floors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position in a reference clinical setting. The employee must be available during the "core" work hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel:

Travel is possible within this position.
