Lead Flexographic Printing Press Operator
2nd Shift - Full time M-F 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm

What you’ll be doing:
Drive up the quality and efficiency by running the press, communicating with the team, checking the print quality against all specifications on every roll, adjusting color in the press if needed and performing all other duties within the scope of the position.
  • Directly supervises 2-4 employees in the Press Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Reads job order and makes sure all supplies are ready for change over; proper ink, cylinders, raw materials and paperwork.
  • Clean ink trays, doctor blade chambers and anilox rollers using cleaning solvent, brush and rags.
  • Install plate cylinders using hand tolls and power tools, as necessary.
  • Lifts and positions rolls on unwind using chain hoist with the help of a press apprentice or another pressman while checking raw material for treatment.
  • Adjust machine parts such as unwind tension and web guides.
  • Make sure cylinders are mounted and geared up, spare doctor blade chambers are prepared and ink kits ready so that there is no break in production at set up.
  • Set up unwind and operate for "flying splices".
  • Splice end of roll to trailer sheet remaining in press, using tape and turn handwheel to regulate roll tension and feed as directed.
  • Start press, adjusting speed, tension and alignment of printing plate as necessary.
  • Cut sample of printed material from end of printed roll and inspect for imperfections such as blurred or off center impressions.
  • Remove printed material and record weight and all necessary production and quality information.
  • May mix ink or dyes to produce desired colors to maintain viscosity and color consistency.
  • Observe mechanical operation and indicating gauges, such as an ammeter and air pressure gauges and comparing to process information paperwork to ensure specified operating levels are maintained. Make adjustments as necessary.
  • All finished orders should be checked against the Extrusion paperwork to ensure all film is accounted for, printed and labeled correctly, example: ahead of slitter, converting or outside sale.
  • Correctly fill out and hand in all paperwork regarding releases.
  • Maintain peak operating performance of presses by regularly lubricating press with grease gun or oil can, removing and replacing worn rollers and adjusting pressure between rollers using hand tools.
  • Clean press and surrounding work area to maintain an organized work environment.
  • Keep daily time, production and material usage reports.
  • Assist in exposing and developing printing plates.
  • Regulate the temperature of gas-fired drying units.
  • Fills in during the absence of shift supervisor to ensure consistency within the shift.
  • Responsible for maintaining, labeling and handling of hazardous waste.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner so that you get along with clients, customers, vendors, co-workers and supervisors.
What we are looking for:
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. High level of measuring ability.

Our work environment & the physical demands of this position:
Physical working area is multi- shift, high speed packaging operations which may be noisy and very warm (or very cold). Must be able to access any area inside, outside and around facility including may need to ascend/descend stairways, narrow passageways and layout of expansive operations to access production equipment which may be located at any level inside and/or outside the building. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work safely around machinery and chemicals, read and follow equipment manufacturers’ specifications.
